Hi. Does anyone know if an accident, such as a fall down the stairs, during infancy could result in a condition such as AS? I know that I went down the basement stairs in a "walker" when I was an infant, and I am surprised that I survived it. I don't know what, exactly, happened to me during the fall, but I wouldn't be surprised if I hit my head sometime during the fall. Could this have caused frontal lobe damage?

Yep. It would explain brain lesions, blocked pathways and atrophied neurons. The whole 9 yards. I also suffered a fall right after birth. It does explain a lot.

Hrmm...I had a head injury when I was around 4-5 years old. I was running in the grocery store, racing my older brother. Our shopping cart had a bit of the metal protruding out. I couldn't stop and smacked my forehead into it. I think I hit my head when I fell, too...but I can't really remember. I had to go to the emergency room, but they just stuck a bandaid over my forehead and said that it would heal.

I'm not sure how much the cart went into my head. Couldn't have been too much. And I'm sure I didn't have a concussion or they would have been able to tell.

I still have the scar.

I had a beautiful black eye when I ran into the coffee table when I was a toddler and smacked my face/head on it.

But I distinctly remember explaining to my Mum why I flapped my hands when I was stressed or worried a year before that, which to me just shows I was already 'autistic' and have been since birth.

I'm still under the impression that it's mainly caused by genes and the like, but if it's of any relevance - my head suffered a heavy landing on the outside on a concrete path when I was 3 I think...

Still adds to this theory. But I'm not sure if I personally buy it. Still - interesting theory, mind.
I won't judge it.

Apparently I smacked my head off a chair when I was a toddler, needing stitches up the left side of my forehead. You can still see the scar, although it's below my eyebrow, now.
I'd be careful about confusing any correlation you see here with causation - most aspergians have coordination issues, a high rate of early head injuries might be because of our Asperger's, not the cause of it.

I agree - "because of."

I've had more than my share of head bumps, but I was a weirdo to begin with. I think I was six when I was throwing a crowbar up in the air to watch how it landed, except it came down on the crown of my head. Dead center! I bled a fair bit as I ran home.... I don't remember my mom being too concerned. Maybe she was drunk.

Well...alot of my AS-ish tendancies really seem to run in the family....but I am also kinda on the dim side compered to my older relatives....

I was dropped squarely on the head from about 3 feet up when I was about 3.... I used to think it was the reason for all my neuro-problems...even though it was not treated as an emergency at the time. I am moderator of tribe in another forum called "dropped on the head as a child"...it was in that tribe that someone first suggested to me that I look into the whole "autistic spectrum" thing in the first place, because it matched my list of mental quirks that I had attributed to the head drop.....
I was also a forceps baby...born a month late and underweight....forceps=possible head trauma..I think...some people say....

I even have a song about it that people don't like me to sing because they say it is too personal..
(it is supposed to be funny)..juast as I was half-joking with the dropped on the head as a child tribe

here is part of the song

dim
dropped on the head when I was small
from 3 feet up
at least i'm not dead-just a little bit dull-I'm dim

so I can't drive cars or play video games
have trouble remembering faces and names
and I don't know exactly what to blame...

(and so on and so forth)

I had encephalitis when I was 3, which I have to imagine had some lasting effect on me.

My AS symptoms began to go worse when I fell down the stairs when I was 5. I hit my head and now I have a thunderbolt-shaped scar on my forehead.

A traumatic brain injury can manifest itself any number of ways, depending on which region of the brain is affected. Frontal lobe injuries can result in memory problems, occipital lobe injuries in impaired vision, etc.

I bumped my head several times as a child and got some big "eggs" on my forehead, but I think I was different from others from birth.

Hmm, I was a forceps baby too... also once when I was 8 or 9 or 10 I hit my head very hard on a cement pillar once; it hurt like hell for like half an hour and bled a little.
