Very excited, just found out that Tony Atwood is coming to my home town and I am in process of buyng tickets now.

From the website:

Quote:
Topics that will be covered in the seminar include:

AN INTRODUCTION TO ASPERGER’S SYNDROME (HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISM)
Characteristics in children and adults to be explained and the effects on the
person’s daily life.

IMPROVING THE SOCIAL WORLD OF CHILDREN AND TEENS WITH ASPERGER’S SYNDROME
Strategies to apply at school and at home

ASD DIAGNOSIS – WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT?
Strategies to help explain a persons Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis to
them, their siblings, extended family and peers in a positive and supportive manner.

Not sure what to expect but I've heard nothing but good news from smelena and others that have seen him.

Enjoy - I found out I had it at one of his seminars; the man is a legend, you'll have a great time! :)

I thought that, then I went to one of his " partners and couples" seminars. The man's a hypocrite. His opinions change with his target audience.

Let me guess, poor, poor "NT" people who're attached to unemotional monsters?

That and more.
The worst of it was we were having a few marriage problems at the time(partly related to AS, mostly not) and I had gone to the trouble of organising tickets, accommodation and time off work, and convinced my husband to go with me, as we would get a few insights.
I got 6 hours of moaning instead. Being criticised and humiliated by an "expert" and a bunch of people who don't know me from a bar of soap is not what I had in mind.

OP, if you think he's great, get his book from the library. Don't waste your money.

I really don't know why people like him so much; I didn't even know who he was before coming here, and from what I've seen, he'd rather try and have us "change" to fit society rather than having society be more accepting and understanding of us (see: social and emotional training that's for the benefit of others in reality, it's only for us due to their response to us that makes it so uncomfortable for us).

If you listen to the audio on his site, he outright states that "aspies" are an untapped resource for society. I don't know about other people, but thinking that I should get treatment so I can help the society that I don't care for at all, and to perhaps be "worth" something to them then, strikes me as...insulting. Equating anyone to a "resource" is insulting to me too.

But then, I don't know about anyone else.

Sure, he may say some nice things, but they're totally overshadowed by other things he has said.

I've found Tony Attwood's seminars really helpful.

He's helped me understand my sons and adapt the way I communicate with him.

I went to a partner's support group (missed the seminar) and I didn't believe he came across as negative about Aspies. I suppose different people have different perceptions.

I found the comment about adapting what he says to his audience. The audience is usually a mix of Aspies, NT's, teachers, parents etc.

First of all this isn't a couples therapy session...

First and foremost I am going because, if you read the seminar description, he covers topics that are of import to myself.

Secondly, his book has been most informative and a valuable resource in my own understanding of Asperger's (coupled with other resources.)

Thirdly he is an NT that has spent his career trying to understand AS. Even if he does make some jokes that I do not laugh at it is still a valuable experience and information gathering experience.
