I was at the Job Centre yesterday being interviewed which was fun. Basically they wanted to take details about me like where I live who I live with etc. I have no qualifications what so ever. But the person who interviewed me said that he was suprised as I seem to have the attitude and the intellegence of someone who has a lot of qualifications. Is this me or is this a normal AS thing?

I feel this is because a lot of us find the school system etc hard to deal with, I had no education - school was hell for me and I only just survived it.

But its like I have always known I'm really intelligent just lacked the confidence for years... being diagnosed and understanding myself has made a huge difference to me

Peers thought I was equal to a doorknob. Professionals think I'm smart.

I do get that, but it's possibly because I'm a writer so I can sound very intelligent when I want to - proper grammar, 'big words' etc.

Or maybe it's because I wear stylish glasses. ;)

Sometimes, mainly because of my accent, good grammar, and politeness.

I am told I look intelligent...I have even been told that I look more intelligent than i am when I wear my glasses....(i don't know whether or not they were joking)
People seem to draw all kinds of silly conclusions about me because I have good annunciation and somewhat stiff mannerisms around people I don't know so well.

And yes...there are also people who think I am dumb as a post.

Not at all. I look much younger than what I really am and must give off stupid nonverbal signals. These people are really shocked when they find out what I am really capable of. However if their first contact with me is through written word only I come across very different and they think I am quite intelligent.

LOOK intelligent? NOPE! I don't think anyone would assume ANYTHING about me based on my physical appearance. HECK, I was told people in Europe could pick out Americans, but they found that they COULDN'T peg me as American!

I DO appear to be intelligent if anyone talks to me a while, etc... I have a LOT of eclectic knowledge.

MrMacPhisto,

Maybe your grammar, word choice, and apparent knowledge, just made the person figure that you must be well educated(formally) and smart. And, certainly NOT to belittle you, that isn't hard to do these days. There are a lot of people out there that really make me wonder if there is hope for civilization.

I don't know about my physical appearance reflecting intelligence. I look much younger than my age, but people generally consider me intelligent. I have a good memory for factual information and people have asked me for answers to questions on certain subjects.

Actually I never wrote anything down for the man to look at but I did present myself very well. Also I managed not talking in a monotone voice and when talking to the man at the Job Centre sounded more NT than anything. Let's hope I keep it up. Not wishing anything but you can fool people though to make you more cleverer.

a lot of people think i am quite smart, but the schools think i am stupid as hell because i suck in academics yet i am an absolute powerchair, assistive technology, stock market, neurological disease and disability, sensory integration disorder geek. those are my areas of major interest... school bores the f**k out of me

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

I look like a geek without glasses ( but felt like an outcast in the geeks group ) , don't wear a t-shirt, don't have pens or a notepad put in the front pocket, but have a PDA, they seem to be shocked about how intelligent I am, don't know why they think outgoing people are more aware of things than people who don't... My grades also where not in the C's, but then they failed to give me any help with my dyslexia got d, and loads of e's...

But they say introverts are bad at 25% of school test, & you need a 80% these days for a C

People are always really surprised when they realize how intelligent I am. I guess I don't "look" smart.

I've always thought it was an awful commentary on education that they could not put standards into place, but let students figure out how to follow them. I learn much better and in more significant context if the subject is something I am interested in. In the American education system, it's all about standards and not leaving children behind. (Doesn't this bring up all sorts of strange images of small children behind doors, behind furniture, etc.) So, my idea was always that you could teach the standards in the context of the things that the children were interested in. I learned so much more from my own research papers and projects than anything that was every actually taught to me. There's a lot to be said for rote memorization as well. We are all learners who learn actively through repetition. Which means that we have to touch it and do it over and over.

So, as for looking intelligent....hmmm. I guess I'm not sure how people who are intelligent look. My husband has billions of TV circuit boards in his head and can build a computer from scratch with nothing but spare parts. Give him any machine and he's a genius at finding the problem and fixing it. He looks like a Ken doll.

I can tell you about everything you didn't want to know about serial killers and the psychopathic thinking patterns that cause them. I can tell you hours of mindless trivia and beat the s**t out of most people on trivia games. Find-a-words are so easy I don't even waste my time. I look like Skipper. Which I guess is good in a way. My husband's previous love interests all looked like Barbie dolls. So now, I tell him that he thought he liked Barbie, til he found out what Skipper would do! LOL.

So, I think the premise is subjective.

I look quite intelligent to most people. That's probably because of my horn-rimmed glasses.
