Several sources I have looked at seem to suggest it is harder for an aspie to ride a bicycle. Is this due to balance issues? Or road skills/awareness?

Strange. I have really good balance (my parents noticed it at a very young age) but I learned to ride a bicycle at five but I could not do it without training wheels until I was ten. I will admit, despite my good balance, I often end up in strnage places due to falling, but I can always pick myself up again and I never really fall except for when I do it to relieve the stress around me (like in gym when we have to dribble a basketball, the comes loose so I "fall"). If I start to fall or stumble, I nearly always catch myself before I fall, but I will bump into things. Is there anyone else like that or is it just me? -Power Girl

I haven't ridden a bike in YEARS. It's been about 20 years or so.

And what's "HPV"? Human Papilloma Virus?

In this context, "Human Powered Vehicle."
I love biking. I am pretty uncoordinated generally, but on a bike I do okay.

It took me a longer time to learn but once I did I loved it. I have had times where the bike was my primary mode of transportation. My problems learning to ride were balance and fear.

I would go crazy-far distances by myself on my bike with training wheels at an early age without my parents knowing.
I learned to ride a bike at the normal age. My bike is my primary mode of transportation.

I just can't drive a car due to fear and problems with depth perception.

How far is crazy far?

Some people say I ride crazy distances.
In 2007 I have:
Ridden 143 miles in one day.
Ridden 390 miles in 72 hours.
Ride 13 miles to work and 13 miles back, every week day.
Did 9,500 miles in 2007.

I don't remember having trouble learning to ride a bike when I was a kid, but I went for at least 10 years without riding one before ending up getting a bike for my birthday last year because I wanted to use it to get some exercise. You know how the say that you never forget how to ride a bike? Well, they were wrong. I tried for a few weeks of going out on it, I could get the thing going and not fall over but staying in a straight line and stopping were really awkward for me. I really don't remember riding a bike to be that difficult. It ended up being a waste of money as Ive not gotten back on the thing in months.

oh...crazy-far for an unsupervised kid under 5...which seemed a long way to me at the time..but it was probably just a couple of miles.

Trouble riding a bicycle? Oh yes, I had. It took me ages to learn it, because I had trouble with my balance and fell over almost immediately. It was very frustrating to learn and my family got angry on more than one occasion, because I was extremely stupid in learning this.

I second the idea that you can indeed forget how to ride a bicycle. I tried last summer with a friend who does this as a real sport and I repeatedly fell to the side until I managed to stay upright for a few metres.

I can't cycle on the roads most of the time because of a lack of awareness of what's around me - also, my balance is too poor to do hand signals. I also find it too stressy. (I did do a paper round when I was v. little. This was OK because it was too early in the morning for there to be many cars).

However, I do like to push my bike as far as the common, and go cycling there.
