I'm just wondering if I'm the only one in the entire world that has phenylketonuria. Phenylketonuria is a rare hereditary condition in which phenylalanine (an amino acid) is not properly metabolized. Phenylalanine is found in almost all meats and everything sweetened with aspartame, which is really bad for you anyway. :p

This is also why I'm a vegetarian.

Well, if they already had a name for it when they diagnosed you, you probably weren't the first. They usually don't come up with names for theoretical conditions.

I'm not, though I cannot handle aspartame, it just tastes like chemical and wreaks havoc on the body. Nobody should ever touch that stuff; it's literally poison. I cannot express my hatred of that crap enough.

I do not, but my mum has it. She cannot eat tomatoes or mushrooms either.

I'm actually lucky to have a pretty mild case of PKU, and I know that most other people with it have to watch their diet a LOT more than me.

not really, I did notice once that when they had me on fish oil, that if I ate tomatoes, I would break out in what felt like a sunburn...but that's as close as I get.

Some people with PKU have to restrict their diets to a very severe degree. They have to drink some foul-smelling stuff instead of eating real food. I am fortunate I don't have anything like that.
