So I've never really thought about this until very recently. You know, just having learned about AS a couple months ago I'm still digging around my head every day trying to figure out what I can about myself in relation to Aspergers. So anyway, I came to the realization that I have, in fact, had a long term obsession when I thought I only went through phases of obsessions. Yeah, I could be wrong. Maybe it's just a hobby? How does one know the difference?

I'm pretty obsessive about any and all music. Memorizing every word, every single pitch and voice inflection. Every note of every instrument. I keep all of this information stored in my head, and I'm actually amazing at recognizing a singers voice, even if I only heard one of their songs 5 years ago I can spot it again right away. I think it's the only real ongoing obsession I've ever had and I've had it since my earliest memories. Except for being three and singing "Taking Care of Buscuits" instead of "Taking Care of Business". BTO for the win. Anyway. Thing is, for me it's almost like a stim of sorts. I get immense satisfaction from tapping out perfect drum beats. Or waiting through a long build-up in a song, banging my head at the precise time the music starts. I also really, really like listening to XM radio and naming all the bands as they come on even if I've never heard the song before. I'm right like 90% of the time I swear. I get immense gratification from helping everyone figure out who sings that one song they love but can't remember the name of. Seriously, I play songs in my head like a friggin' juke box.

Watch now. You're all going to bombard me with musical questions and I'll end up not knowing any of the answers :P

Thoughts, though? Anyone else a music addict to this extent?

Sounds ok. It's definitely something society would accept more so than other obsessions. Have you thought about a music career? You would probably blow everyone away in the music field if you truly do have that type of memory. You could probably try going out for directing a band.

Me, I've always been obsessed about politics, and done real well at Math, which is why I'm getting a Mathematics and Political Science degree hoping I can get a degree with Political Science without having to be a math teacher.

and i thought i was the only one who did this...

my family likes to challenge me with 'name that tune' and artist when listening to the radio, or one of my brothers will play a cd and ask me who it is...and like you, i'm right like 90% of the time...i thought i was just weird!

i do the same thing as well with memorizing lyrics and beats and everything about songs...it's nuts. and irritating at times especially if i don't get it right after hearing the song only once...lol! and i never figured out why it was that i could hear a song once, pretty much have the lyrics memorized by the time i heard it again, but in school i could never remember any important information (like for tests and stuff)....go figure.

and if anyone wants to challenge you, i'll help you out best i can...lol!

They have a show called the Singing Bee, that plays. I'm sure you could easily win at that...

That is similar. Don't Forget the lyrics is almost like the show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader", but it starts out with TYPES of music you can choose from, and then you are given a choice of two songs. They then have a karaoke session, except that there are 2+ words missing. YOUR job is to ignore that, and just keep singing. You have three saves IIRC:

1. backup singers(One of a couple friends can help you if you want)
2. multiple choice(You see 3 lyrics, but only one is right)
3. Partial validation(2 or 3 words that you choose can be checked)

BTW as I recall, you can generally win about 1 million dollars.

This sounds exactly like me.

I can also identify almost every song I've ever heard from hearing just one or two seconds from any point in the song.
