Mississippi isn't a dense urban center. That's probably why: fewer people in close proximity.

I did see a news feature on how Mississippi was affected, so they're not completely being shafted.

While there has been a great deal of property damage in Ms., there doesn't seem to have been anywhere near as much loss of life. I think it is a less dense, more middle class population in the area who were able to evacuate themselves.

Biloxi was destroyed. New Orleans was flooded. Most everyone who's died in Mississippi died during the storm I believe. New Orleans is still in peril. That's mostly why you hear more about New Orleans. And plus more people are concerned about New Orleans and the lack of aid that was very apparent. It made a bigger news story. Thus, we see more of it.
