I apologize if this thread has already been created, i couldn't find one.

I like to sing along to a song im listening too, but i usually can't keep up with the lyrics, well i can keep up sometimes but for only so long, then it just turns into a bunch of muffled sounds. Quite similar to Micheal from the Office. Does anybody else experience this and if so would you consider it an AS trait?

I don't know if it is or isn't. I'm actually pretty lyric blind. I can listen and do listen to the same song repeatedly for days and not be able to recite the lyrics. Mostly the voice is just another instrument to me. That isn't to say that I don't get interested in the words and it's so much easier now that you can find them easily on the net. Some artists I look into their words more carefully then others, but I can sing a long only a little. I think also it (music) is more of a mood set for me, facilitates what I'm really doing and since I don't multitask it's back ground with a driving beat. In other words it's a stim.

From the books and the articles I've read, it is a symptom of AS to have a difficulty coordinating timing with other people or things. Ball games, for instance, require coordination of timing with others. Swimming, on the other hand, does not. So, it would make sense that Aspies would have a difficulty keeping up with a song when they are trying to synchronize with something or someone. If my assumptions are correct, you should be able to sing fine if you were playing the accompaniment yourself (or with no accompaniment).

Do you remember what book you read that from?

I sing along all the time, pitch and word perfect. But I'm a musician and have been my whole life; all my friends are in bands, I interview bands daily, live at gigs... music is my entire world. So perhaps that helps. ;)

I know a lot of NTs that have this problem. I wouldn't think of it as an autistic trait. I think it's that we are very familiar with refrains (chorus) but not with all the verses, so we start mumbling along. Go to a Protestant church and hear the voices fade after the first verse is over. It's really funny to hear people belting out the start of a tune and then mumbling the rest. :)

Haha this just reminded me of one New Year's when I was fairly drunk and staggered home with one of my good friends, who is French. I put my stereo on shuffle and along came some Carla Bruni. I started singing along (it's all in French) and her eyes just about popped out of her head. "You speak French?! And you never told me?!" she cried.
"Nope, I just know this song..."
"But all your pronounciation is perfect! And you know all the words!"
"Well, I've heard it a few times..."
"Let's sing!"
So we sat and sang very loudly and drunkenly in French for the next hour or two. :D

I can't understand 95% of all lyrics I hear unless I listen really intently and repeatedly. They're just sounds. Sometimes I get the chorus on the first listen (if it's short/catchy). I can't process the other sounds while processing the voice(s).

Most of the music I listen to doesn't have lyrics, but the one's I do I don't even understand. Perhaps because they're in a different language.

I do find myself tapping along. I have a good ear for percussion. :)

I try to play along with pieces that I like (for the clarinet), and I end up getting out of sync. However, if I'm playing without listening to them, I can do a near-perfect imitation.

I love to sing along with pretty much whatever I'm listening to because it keeps me in practice and my family doesn't mind. Though I never have trouble with lyrics - I have a huge music collection and I know the lyrics and tune to pretty much every song I own, including stuff from musical theater. I can and will sing along to pretty much anything I have playing.

well, i did it all the time , especially in the car. I like singing in the car, mainly because you can scream all you want, and no one will be there to hear you. Plus, the acoustic is great!
