ifs"

I was watching The Medicated Child and this mother of this bipolar girl was crying about how her daughter would have to take meds for the rest of her life if she wanted to have a family, a job or an education. She said that she thought about her daughter's first prom and that, but now she just accepts her for who she is and lets her just do what she can do.This is ridiculous IMHO because:

1. When she's on the meds she's fine. She's 13; that's probably why she was still moody on them!

2. Bipolar makes people different, not more disabled. Bipolar people are more creative. (In general.) She may not be able to hold a regular job, but that's because bipolar people aren't meant to do that kind of stuff. They're meant for something more grandiose than that. They're meant to be movie stars, singers and that. You hear of all these bipolar stars. They're stars BECAUSE they're bipolar, not in spite of it.

3. HS prom isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway.

I have seen some people with bipolar disorder on medicines that were just making them zombies. After some time the amount of medicine was adjusted and they were closer to their original personalities (I knew).

But that Prom-thing sounds disgusting, finding a date etc. Sounds like an event with a lot of peer pressure.

I dated someone for 9 years who had bipolar. Among my more pleasant names for her were 'she who must be appeased', and 'the travel agent for guilt trips'. I don't recommend 2 different kinds of diagnostic categories working at cross-purposes.

Medication is never the only answer!

Anyone with bipolar highly recommend... see below....
Love this quote from Stephen Fry's program, well worth viewing:
"But the idea that once you start on medication and each time you go off it you seem to get worse is a very grim one."

I saw that same show. It aired just before the Independent Lens with the guy who has AS. I was thinking the same thing...you know, whenever your child has a disability, you do have to kind of rethink your dreams for them a little bit. Technically, though they should be living out their own dreams. So.....you have to compromise a little.

I did think that same thing about that mom. Maybe her dreams for herself don't include being medicated and being married and having a "regular" job. Whatever the hell that means.

My own mother was never happy with this world, because she preferred her own dream world and as that never happen, she felt let down. Her dream never included being medicated and in her mind unsuccessful mother and boring job. She always really believe she deserved so much more, wanted someone to take care of her, give her the world! but of course never happens in reality..

Meds are better than being shocked into submission . . .

I'm so, so glad I didn't graduate from a US high school.

My mother had shock treatment too, like many others, if they couldn't understand you back then they tried to change you.
