As an individual with AS I know heightened senses for us is normal. Sometimes having heightened senses can be very distressing (sensory overload), but I have discovered a very strong ability within myself to discern various ingredients in foods, which explains why i like certain foods and others are so bitter or strong that I have to spit them out immediately..with severe urgency. I saw an online discussion about supertasters, and followed a "self-diagnosis" test involving using blue food dye, a piece of opaque material having a hole in it approximately 1/4" in diameter to place on my tongue, a mirror, and a magnifying glass.
According to the results, I am definitely a SUPERTASTER. I guess this is one of autism's gifts. Who else has this?

you may also have an excellent sense of smell Shirt.

almost half of our sense of smell comes from our sense of taste (air flows into the back of the tongue and your taste buds combine with your olfactory system to make a sense of smell and viceversa..thats why if you hold your breath you wont taste anything and why you wont smell much if you have your mouth full of water.

And yes petit, that does mean people 'taste' your nuclear storms.

I bet that makes you feel better ;)

Is that the program that said something about supertasters not liking alcoholic beverages?

Maybe that's why I hate beer.

Are "heightened senses" really a symptom of AS? I thought it was just increased sensitivity...

You of course can relate (or critique) the They Might Be Giants song...

They Might Be Giants "John Lee Supertaster" lyrics

Flans: When I was 39 years old, I heard a story. I found out that there [are] people walking among us who have superpowers. These people are called Supertasters. To a Supertaster, bitter fruits taste far more bitter, and sweets far more sweet. Then, just a few months ago, I had the chance to meet a real, live Supertaster named John Lee.
And this is his true story:
Nothing tastes the same (nothing tastes the same)
To a Supertaster (Supertaster)
When he tastes a pear (tastes a pear)
It's like a hundred pears (it's like a million pears)
He's got superpowers (superpowers)
He is a Supertaster (Supertaster)
Every flavor explodes (explodes and explodes)
Explodes and explodes
John Lee Supertaster
Tastes more than we do
Everything has a flavor
Some flavors are too much
Can't shut his mouth (can't shut his mouth)
'Cause he's a Supertaster (Supertaster)
Though he looks like a man (talks like a man)
He is a Supertaster (Supertaster)
Can't drink coffee or beer (coffee or beer)
'Cause he's a Supertaster (Supertaster)
Loves ice cream and pie (ice cream and pie)
He is a Supertaster
John Lee Supertaster
Tastes more than we know
Everything has a flavor
Some flavors must go

Never had much of a sweet tooth, but God, I love bitter stuff. When I was a kid I got into a bottle of adult aspirin and ate nearly all of it before I was discovered. My favorite beer is India Pale Ale. Baker's chocolate is too sweet for me. Love tonic water. Also chile peppers.

Don't have much of a sense of smell, so that is probably why I like my food highly spiced, so that I have a fighting chance of tasting it.

Calvin Trillan once said something along the lines of when you eat an apple, nothing much remarkable happens, but when you eat hot peppers your mouth wakes up and says hey, something's going on here.

Chileheads rock!

Both my mom and I are people that must touch the texture of objects with our fingers. My sister is similar in that she taps everything.
