Until I'm either working in a permanent/stable full time career or have been provided SSI benefits, I have to scrounge for the stuff that can't be purchased on food stamps, i.e. shampoo, toothpaste etc.

I've done plasma but I'm kind of burned out on that. I could really use some good ideas on how to generate a little bit of cash!

Thanks!

There was a guy here who became a kind of professional griever and dressed smart enough to attend every wake or funeral reception he could, in order to pay his respects to the (unknown) deceased while obtaining food. He went too far (filling a tupperware box with food) and they put his mugshot on all the funeral homes. Likewise, the supermarkets have incredibly low prices on perishable foods (bread and sandwiches) just before closing time and restaurants throw out good food at the end of each day. We live in a society awash with food (very unevenly shared) where at least it should be possible to eat without dumpster-diving.

Cash is much harder, because it is in exchange for something you have.

I have found people much more ready to exchange labour or trade goods for my time. I can fix things (electrics, woodwork and computer setup) and have had e.g. solicitor time, floor tiling in exchange.

If you're in America, this looks interesting: http://becomeaguide.chacha.com/

I don't know if it's actually a viable way of getting some cash as I'm not American and therefore can't trial it, but on paper, it sounds interesting.

Do you have a hobby, that you can make money off of? I know lots of people, who sell their artwork and crafts.

This is what I do. It's fully legal, as you work as a independent contractor for them. Basically it's a sms-based "people" search engine, (kinda like KGB, but free for the consumer). You get paid for answering the queries brought in by the customers.

When you join you can use my e-mail as the referrer: jdcnosse AT gmail DOT com

You can make $2-$6/hr depending on how fast you are, and how the traffic is. I've made $10 in a day before, other people (more motivated than me) have made more lol

You can get tons of free stuff in the garbage, including really good food. (More info on that here: http://freegan.info/ ) Some of the stuff you find you might be able to resell on Craiglist or Ebay.

You could also collect bottles and cans and return them for the deposit.

I have a friend who sometimes participates in clinical trials for money. I would stay away from any that ask you to try a drug, though. Some only ask you to answer questions or take a psychological test.

She said she's on foodstamps, so I don't think she needs help finding food ;)

One thing my mom does is buys a lot of pop and returns the cans for a little extra. Michigan gives 10¢ per can, though, so I suppose it might not be as helpful in states that only give 5¢.

Maybe I'm missing something but assuming the 'pop' cans cost more than 10 cents isn't she out of pocket with each purchase of a can of 'pop' :? :?:

Could I suggest drinking tap water (assuming it's drinkable in Michigan), which would save the ENTIRE cost of the can

Foodstamps pay for the pop.

They pay for all sorts of food products, but they do not pay for other necessities like toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc. They don't pay for pet food, either.

If they have a branch in your area, you might want to check out www.freecycle.org.

You also might want to check out food banks or shelters, since they probably get donations of toiletries.

Answer mall questionnaires.

Spend your entire day filling out various sweepstakes and prize forms, your bound to win something.

Train crows to pick up money laying around in exchange for food.

this looks great. but at $2-$6 / hr the panhandler at your local 7-11 would have you beat.

i also know people who do clinical trials, and they are often things like blood thinning medications. they will require you to have blood drawn often and usually force you on a specific diet. one trial a friend was in, it became obvious who was on the placebo because the others were having nightmares. they would probably exclude people with pre-existing conditions, but whether ASD would be among disqualifiers i do not know.

freecycle is a great resource, as is the free items page on craigslist. for acquiring stuff, obviously, not money.
