Has someone ever doubted that you don't drink or smoke?

I talked to a psychologist many years ago and right off the bat one of the first questions she asked me is if I drink or smoke. I told her the truth. I told her that I don't drink or smoke. Her reaction was silence and then an inquisitive look as if trying to read my body language.

From my point of view, it looked like she doubted the veracity of my answer. Needless to say, I felt extremely insulted, more so considering the fact that the person who distrusted me was a mental health professional.

Some people lie. She didn't know you so she had every reason to think you might be lying. You really shouldn't feel insulted or let stuff like this bother you.

I used to feel insulted when people accused me of lying because I (almost) always told the truth but then later realized they had no way of knowing since they didn't know me very well.

Psychologist's think they know everything, its quite funny. They get an extreme sense of power from being in their position.

This reminds me of a time I had a physical with a new doctor. I was in my early twenties at the time. She asked me what type of birth control I used. I told her "None." Then she went on this tirade about how I should be using birth control, and never gave me a chance to tell her that I was a virgin.

That's awesome. If I were you, I would have started a thread on the subject :D

Ooh yeah. On the trip to Europe in grade 11 everyone suspected I was a closet alcoholic.

I was tired at a party one night and started shutting down and just leaning against a wall with my eyes closed. My cousin asked if I had done some drugs and I lied "yes". Since then I've never been able to convince him otherwise about that occasion...but that's more of my fault.

I don't have to- it fits perfectly with your thread :)
Anyway, I used to never drink, and I think it sort of preemptively offended people when they found out- like they maybe expected me to flaunt some imagined moral or health superiority over them? When, I simply just didn't drink.

For some reason, I kind of like drinking. I HATED it when I was six, and a friend gave me a sip of beer. STILL, I only drink a couple times every few years. I NEVER drink alone, it is 100% social. MOST people doubt I drink alcohol, because I never seem to drink. I probably go into a place that sells alcoholic drinks about 25 times for every time I get one drink!

don't be offended

people with drug and/or alcohol problems usually lie about it and can be pretty good at hiding it. I did.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

Some people don't seem to like it when they learn that I don't drink or smoke. Their reaction (weird looks, change in mood) gives me the impression that they think I think I am somehow morally superior to them just because I don't drink or smoke.

I was lucky in that the one time I tried to smoke, I had plenty of older girls laughing at what an idiot I was...;) well, that turned out rather well, though..;)

Never really drank all that much, was afraid of getting out of control (more than usual...;)

In highschool and middle school, a lot of people thought I was a huge drug user because of how badly my depression wrecked my outward appearance.

Ever since adolecence people thought I was the biggest stoner on the planet. I only do it very very occassionally (like 3 times a year maybe), but the way I act and the sort way i talk of the poetry of science i guess some people thought i was a stoner.
