I can put up with that; it happens so infrequently now that I don't really much care. But I can hear their conversation and it's what they're talking about that's pissing me off.

They're talking about how they hate "special people." And how it's okay if you have a special kid if it's the government's fault, because then you get money. And how they don't mind these "special kids" as long as they don't touch them. They're also talking about how they know this one girl who has a "special" son, but he's okay because his mom keeps him clean and doesn't drool or anything.

And they're talking about the "special" classes that their high schools had and how it was strange that some of the people in those classes looked "normal" and they couldn't understand what was wrong with them.

*breaks something*

One of them works here at the library. I'm tempted to go to one of her supervisors and tell them that I don't appreciate the indirect harassment.

How can you be POSITIVE they were harassing you ? Do you show some sort of outward sign?

You aim to misbehave? I wish I'd been there to overhear that; there'd have been some misbehaving.

I don't give an at's rass about what people think about me; but I get rather touchy when it comes to my very special son.

Ironically, part of his own special bliss is that his autism makes him entirely immune to the scorn of others.

That's an interesting point. I would have asked them.

Good fortune,

- Icarus is only borderline special...

But if they are harassing him, they'll deny it.
Catch-22, you see.

They probably figure you are ret*d and won't understand they are talking about you.

Their answer would be irrelivant; my asking in and of itself would be the point, along with the look in my eye.

My way is not perfect; it is just my way.

Good fortune,

I'm assuming these were university students. You'd think they would outgrow this thinking once they were out of high school. Unfortunately, from what I've seen, people just get better at masking their contempt for those who are different.

Don't let those morons at the library get you down. People like that must have some real issues with their own self-esteem if they find pleasure in putting down those with disabilities.

They'd deny that they were talking about you but then say "oooh so you're special etc."

Just content yourself with the fact that you are indeed very special and that they aren't worth a damn.

If that approach you directly, then you can get them for harassment.

Yeah, these people RARELY change and when they DO, it is usually for the wrong reason.

They employed people with disabilities at my uni library. An amputee at the loans desk etc. I thought most libraries were EEO employers.
