In a couple of weeks I am going to the other side of the country to visit GalileoAce-and to see Melbourne as well.
This is the first time I have travelled like this absolutely on my own. Should I be scared?
I am feeling very tempted to ask for a seat with no-one sitting next to me on the plane. But I know that the chances of this coming true are very slim. I would like to know how others deal with this.
I have gotten to know GA for quite a while, even before I joined WP. I am jumping at the chance to go and meet him. We are going to go around Melbourne looking for anything sciencey related to do. We are both Trekkies, so I can tell we will have lots to talk about! I have never done anything like this before, and am excited and nervous at the same time. It is loads different meeting someone in real life that you have previously only known on the internet. I know, I have done it before. And I made a fool of myself.
Has anybody else got experiences that they could share here? I would be very grateful to read them.

Ghosthunter has visited a good many members in the USA. I think you could look up his threads if you want to see what it was like.

My Mum could only afford to do one really big birthday party, either 18th or 21st. My sister chose her 18th, I chose my 21st...
In 2003 my family decided to move up to Queensland, to start afresh...My 21st wasn't till 2004
So come 2004 I decided I'd fly back down to Geelong to celebrate my 21st with my friends. It wouldn't be as large as my sister's 18th, but it'd be something. (It's still something I'm pissed at my parents for)
I got plane tickets (with JetStar); my first plane trip. I was lucky enough to get a window seat, with no one sitting next to me. It was awesome :D
Anyways, when I got to Geelong, I knew I had to stay, so I started looking for a place of mine. I did eventually find one, after sponging off of my cousin for a few weeks.
Come Xmas 2004, I wanted to go back up to QLD to celebrate it with my family, so I used my still un-used return ticket. I got another vacant window seat :D
But on the flight back, I didn't get a window seat, and had to sit one seat away from someone :?
A little unpleasant but I managed.

So, what I'm saying is; that chances are you'll get a seat all to yourself, and a window seat... But only if you get to the Airport early. :)

For those not of Aussieland:

Queensland - North Eastern state of Australia
Geelong - the second largest city in Victoria (south eastern state of Australia)
JetStar - A (relatively) cheap local Air carrier run by Qantas (if you haven't heard of Qantas, then Google shall tell you)
QLD - Queensland.

Why not try and meet up with the other Victorians (Phoenix, Sanity etc) at some stage? It's not that long a flight, you can cope with people sitting next to you. Have a great time!

I really don't like people sitting next to me, especially people I don't know. I will also be given a meal on the plane. Well, that is even worse. I don't like eating if I am not comfortable.

If Phoenix and Sanity want to meet too, that would be really good. I am over there for two weeks. I am staying in Central Melbourne.

P.S. GA bites?

It's lucky you and GalileoAce are going to get to hang out together! For the plane thing, I guess the only way to guarantee you'll have an empty seat next to you is to buy two tickets with adjacent seats. Even then, the seating is subject to change.

Eh, I can't afford two tickets. I will ask for a window seat, and try to sit as close to the window as possible. I will also take a very engrossing book.
