I'm asking should we have a sign, a special wave, a badge. something covert, subtle that can be incorporated into our
appearance that would identify us to each other and people educated enough on the subject to know it but still be invisible
to the general public. If so what should it be.
It should be simple enough to be easily copied and should blend well with different styles of closes. eg a pink scarf
on a construction worker wouldn't work well. just an idea

Sounds like a good idea, but at the same time extremely hard to incorporate into the real world. Perhaps a WP symbol would be easier?

yeah someone good a fashion design or something might have a good idea. the wp logo is good, but it really bugs me when people walk up and ask me "what's that?". and (here at least) that's what it would cause

Or how about a catchy slogan?

Like on abovetopsecret, their slogan is "Deny Ignorance"

Maybe, ours should be "Deny NT"?

:P

pity Deny Ignorance is taken because that looks like a slogan on the face of it but if you know it it's a code.
Deny NT is ok but a bit hostile in my opinion, and i t makes people ask what NT means. good idea though
maybe a general slogan that would include everyones opion here like "Tolerance" or something. i think this
needs consensus to work and every aspie/autie has to be reasonably cool with it, those that thinks it's a
disability and those who don't.

Since being diagnosed I've managed to spot a few of our kind here and there. Lack of eye contact and rocking are more obvious indicators. I reckon most of our kind have no idea what they are, it's a shame, children should be taught about Autism in schools, then maybe we would experience more positive integration.

I'm not in anyway endorsing this, but when someone first mentioned a WP bracelet, I immediately thought of these:

Of course, the makers meant that in another way, but I kind of liked the idea of "Live Wrong".

There are two problems:

  1. Anything that blends in easily with normal dress will also be worn by people for whom it is meaningless, resulting in lots of false positives.
  2. Anything more easily identifiable will stand out and draw more attention from those pesky people who always have to ask "What's that?" Then you have to explain yourself to people who don't really care what it means.

In any case, it's probably better to err in the direction of #2. It's not like there's anything wrong with accidentally having to educate someone. A symbol can easily be worn as jewelry or attached to various articles, say in the form of a pin or button. The orange band is okay, except that every color is taken for something else, and orange means MS before AS, for those who even recognize it at all.

However, a slogan or code like "Deny NT" (besides being obviously stolen) is NOT acceptable at all. You'll get nowhere by telling people what amounts to "We don't like you because you're not one of us." Nothing will be accomplished through exclusivity. Any verbal signal should fulfill two criteria:
  1. Acknowledge an understanding, likeness, or tolerance between and about the people who use/recognize it
  2. Sound unoffensive and in fact totally uninteresting so as not to be a distraction

If you come to define yourself according to some secret handshake (and this is exactly what we're talking about), you'll turn into a bunch of boring people who just shake hands and pat each other on the back for knowing the secret handshake. Then everybody else will hate you because you're hedged up in a group that nobody knows or cares about. Kind of like the high school cliques that you hated. Remember those?

I like that, but how about "Defy Normal"!
