It is a question that is on my mind has any of you have any musical talents. I personally do I play two musical instruments I play Keyboard and Acoustic Guitar (I soon will be learning to play Bass) I also write songs as well. And I play the keyboard in a band.

I was just wondering is there any others who have talent?

I once knew someone who used to be in my band who had AS. (I'm convinced he was wrongly diagnosed he's a natural at socialising he was more NT) He used to talk to me more than the others and he was able to play every instrument in the band one day he told me that the following week he will be able to play keyboard he did and played it better than me!! !

That is why I am asking

What would a band be like if every member had Autism/AS how talented would it be? Do you think it would go far? What issues do you think the songs will be about?

I play and compose myself, on guitars, bass, drums, and keys. I'd play wind instruments, but don't have the breathing capability needed.

I've played in several bands, and I'm like a different person on stage, I can get into the performance. I've never suffered stage fright. Something about the barrier of being on stage as opposed to in the crowd makes me feel safer and separate. But I did not like being a front man; our singer was a natural showman, talking to the crowd, personable, humorous, likeable, got the crowd rolling. I was more happy in the background. And I hated hanging out before and after the show, in the crowd side of things. I could never be a rock star. But if I was talking to someone about music, they probably couldn't shut me up....and they probably would have had to approach me first, or have expressed interest in something actually music related.

But your friend, who you think may have been misdiagnosed because of the socialability: keep in mind many actors are reportedly introverted (I don't know about austistic actors), and they play roles on screen, and often have to be personal for interviews, appearances. It can be faked, and it may even come out if the topic is related to their craft. Maybe the "test" for your friend would be to see him in a non-musical setting out of his element?

I have perfect pitch. I have a good singing voice. I have been in various choirs but no other training for voice. I would have liked training. I think I could have been special.

I have been singing since I learned to talk...and spend alot of time communicating that way. (instead of speaking sentences, I might make up songs about stuff..only around the one person with whom I am most comfortable...and not all the time)
I was lead singer in one band for ten years (age 15 to 25)

Since then, I have been in a variety of musical projects...my most recent band was "Organ Failure" www.organfailure.org
But we are sorta on hiatus at the moment because our lead singer is currently too mentally unstable to work with and our drummer apparently is moving to Oklahoma.

Me and Flakey have a noise project called to annoysters...which pays tribute to all the noises that irritate us:
http://www.myspace.com/theannoysters

I have the "poopy lungstuffing show" where I sing and play the ukulele and hula hoop and play kazoo at the same time.

Technicly i can say I can play the ukulele (my favorite intrument) The guitar (though outof practice and not very well), and I didn;t learn to play the piano till I was 25..and am so-so at it. I would love to play the accordion some day. I also like drums.
I am a compulsive songwriter, though alot of my songs seldom see the light of day...and I get so overwhealmed that it hard to "filter" my writing.

I would love to find other musicians who were more like me...I have Flakey, and we try to work together musicly...(OF)....but I have issues with just working with him one-on one...
I am very sensitive about rhythm, and he has no rhythm at all...(no offense to him intended)..There are also control issues.

It would be really cool to find a non-egotistical (possibly)female musical partner(s) compatable with my social ineptitudes...though I don't know if they exist...at least around here...and the whole concept may be n impossibility due to my various hangups.

I come from a musical family. My mom plays guitar. My dad can play just about any instrument he picks up, but specialises in piano (and sells them for a living)
This being said, I wish I was more musicly talented than I actually am.

Wouldnt say I have talent. But I play guitar and Im learning currently piano. Thing is I tend to get bored with one and try to learn soemthing else. I now want to learn Pan Flute.

MrMac, do you have any of your songs recorded? I might be looking to form a new band. I formed one 3 months ago, but the other guy has been silent for a while, I guess hes not interested anymore or he is scared of my intensity

I don't have any musical talent what so ever. I do like listening to music but I can't sing, play an instrument or even dance.

Again. not sure if I would count as 'talented', but I can put out a passable performance on both Piano and 'leccy guitar.

Yet to find much use for those abilities tohugh, other then to entertain myself when bored.

I also have perfect pitch and can sing. The chicken factor is also a challenge for me. Hopefully, i will b e singing in a band soon. I can play the keyboard and the bass a little. I really enjoy heating up karaoke row, but i miss being in a band. We shall see

I have no musical talent at all but like writing songs or listening to music than performing them.

I don't have any musical talent, after all, I am a deer. Although, humans often comment on the musicality of my gallop!

Do I have musical talent?

I'll leave that up for others to decide...

I also have a good singing voice and, by its older definition which sinsboldly is probably using, perfect pitch. I could have done well. Some on ASDGESTALT have a stricter definition which is truly a rare and savant skill. THEY speak of being able to call out register and pitch, and even sing at a given pitch. MY idea of perfect pitch is being able to sing by memory, match pitches, and determine if something is off, etc...

I ALSO once aspired to learn the piano, but I didn't have the money at the time, and lost the initiative. HECK, for a time there I even tried writing some music.

You know, the same sort of thing happened with math. BOTH before I was 8.

How much genius has been lost simply because people didn't have resources at the right time? Just here, I bet many could say the same.

Oh well, at least science is logical and evolves logically, and I got a fair amount of info there. And it has more immediate application today, and/or requires fewer social skills, than the other areas.

What do we mean by talent?

My piano teacher said so when I was five. Of course, I only had lessons for, like, a year. Also, she was of the old school, technique-wise, so I'm not sure what it says of me that she thought I was good.

I love to play with instruments though, and have been known to make them pretty high priority in my life. I'm just good enough that people get all suprised that I barely read music at all.

I used to have perfect pitch- by the stricter definition- but would have to memorize what things are again before claiming that. Also love to sing. No stage fright.

And I always get high marks for musicality in ballroom and ballet. :D
