WOOOOOOO!! !! I am SOOO thrilled since I knew it wasn't NLD all along. I am so happy I went with my instinct and had him tested.

how old is he? Just curious because I didn't have any dx through high school and my young adulthood and I'm basically a failure.

Patience and understanding...

Well, congratulations to you both. I wish I had known at such an early age.

...to say the least. *dx'd at 24*

mostly, the worst thing was having a mom who thought i was a freakish, horrible child with sever emotional disturbance.

so i think even if your kid hadn't been dx'd at eight, he'd have fared better than me.

yeah the sucky thing is that autism/aspergers wasn't even known, when i was in school, i was previously diagnosed with ptsd, anxiety disorder, depression disorder, schizophrenia and others as well, before aspergers.

i did for about a day or two. vindicated, even.
but i went through some really screwed up stuff when i was a kid, and had i been properly dx'd, they may not have happened. so now i'm having something of a bad spell with some really wicked nightmares/flashbacks.

your son clearly has a mother who is engaged and an advocate for him. that is more important than the diagnosis.

I'm glad your son got a proper diagnosis. My life was a nightmare without one.

i'm sorry you had such a bad experience. what'd your parents have to say once you found out?

yes, i love my son dearly and have done all i can to make sure he doesn't have to struggle. he was finally approved for an iep last month. it was a nightmare because his original diagnosis was nld, which they didn't recognize. it wasn't until they REALLY saw how hard he was having it, that they gave in. his docs today said his coding ow has to be changed to autism instead of learning disability and he should be put in a class for aspergers kids only. i'm sure his school is gonna hate me but oh well!

Oh. Get him a bunch of little dragon figurines and some literature on chemistry. He can have it mastered in two months if he decides he feels like it, and it would give him a valuable excuse for immersing himself in the mathematics early. Tell him I said it's dark magic; trust me, he'll understand if you put it like that. The better chemistry professors I've had are Aspies, sing-song voice and all. You know, like the one I had for General Chemistry II. Every class period, he'd get excited and spend a good five minutes writing out a lengthy formula that had nothing to do with what we were doing in class, and then he'd look a little embarrassed with himself and try to get back to the lecture. When he finished up his lec early, he'd let everyone who wanted to leave get on to lunch, so he could do Q&A with the ones who were struggling. It was outside of general practice, but he was right: it didn't make sense to keep everyone for the full time when all it did was waste their time and make the ones who were having trouble all the more reluctant to ask for help, and slowing down the lecture to fill in the period just annoys people who don't have any problems with the subject. An NT wouldn't have thought of that. I WANT ANOTHER ONE LIKE THAT! Hehe.

Oh, and tell him that another Aspie said hey, and let him know we're all cheering for him.

And keep him away from gamers! They're effing useless!

haha your professors sound like a riot! oh and dragons...my son loves those, but not as much as he loves cars. for the past 4 months it's all he's talked about. he wants to become an automotive engineer, so math will definatley come into play *wink*. i will pass on the hellos and keep in mind the tip about gamers lol thanks!
