It's fairly common, I think. I wouldn't say usual.

I don't. I understand the self destructive impulse though.
Perhaps we could start a poll?

I know of a few people on the spectrum [no names mentioned] who self harm, or used to self harm.
I am a former self harmer and have AS. I'm not sure if it is common or not though as I haven't done any research on this.

I think it is somewhat common...

I used to bite myself when I was a child...actually, I did that for a LONG time...I don't do it anymore. It was the only thing that calmed me down after being angry...not sure why...something about the pain.

My son sometimes does the same and/or will hit his head with his hands. My uncle used to beat his head to the wall.

I self harm myself, badly when i was a child, i can even remember when i was completely non-verbal, throwing myself on the ground and head banging so hard against the floor, my whole face swell up. As i got older, i got much worse. Now if i have a meltdown or extremely upset, been known to hit myself in the head a lot. Sad but true...

It's not a trait associated with the disorder, but alot of us do it.

Self-harm could be considered co-morbid with Autism (regardless of level of functioning). Yes, I have had problems and still sometimes grapple with the urge. Mostly I'm a cutter. When I was little I loved to go into a special under-the-stairs deep closet. I would snuggle into the safe corner way in the back where it was dark and warm. I accidentally found a hot-water pipe in my closet and sometimes I would touch my inner arms to the pipe and burn myself to (I guess) relieve stress. That's really the extent of my self-harm, but bad enough. I have scars on my wrists but there's not gaping apparent, thankfully.

Yeah.

Picking your nails and the skin around them till they bleed equates (it's not all banging, cutting, burning, etcetera).

I have off and on since I was 15/16. I keep trying to stop but it's a hard habit to break.

When I was younger I used to hit my head on the ground when I was really upset or mad. Theses days I will punch myself in the head when mad/upset, but I hardly ever do that. I always hid hurting myself even when I was really young. I don't get self harming, I never wanted to cause myself more pain, but I would still did it anyhow.

I did it when I was 19. It was over my first true love. I'm surprised to see how many people do it now, or have done it.
When I was at make up school with a bunch of "goth" students 15 years younger than me it was epidemic.

I sometimes consider using an electric sander so the scar doesnt look so deliberate. You know lines on the left forearm. I don't want to sscar it over to hurt myself rather to hide my past mistake.

However I have met others who have seen it and knew what it was because they had experienced it. In those moments I was OK because it helped me connect with another person who had been in a unique kind of pain.

I thought I invented it. Last time I was at the laundrymat there was a wjhole article in a magazine about it. Is that advertising?

I have never hurt myself because I was depressed about something like the "goths"(or they did it because it was a foolish fad). It has always been I was freaking out (I guess what is called a meltdown), and if I didn't have something to throw or break, I would run off and hit my head. For me, it has never been something planned out or fully deliberate.

Don't ask me why (I don't know) but when I get REALLY stressed or meltdown, I end up scratching my wrists until they bleed. I hit my head hard and punch various parts of my body.
