Does anyone else feel kind of fake when using exclamation points in a post? I rarely speak with exclamation points, if you know what I mean. I would actually prefer not to use them unless I really, really have a reason too, but I'm afraid people would either think I'm being sarcastic, or misunderstand me.

For example, just saying "Congratulations." seems insincere, even sarcastic.
But "Congratulations!" sounds... fake, coming from me.

Hmm.

... I know the feeling ; ) If I don't really feel the exclamation or emotion, sometimes I try to add exclamations in places in order to keep people interested in reading my post.. I do that in emails too... Maybe it isn't necessary when the readers are all on the spectrum? but I've gotten in the habit of doing that..

I tend to use ellipses often...

I use them in moderation. If I'm conveying excitement over something, I'll use one of them. Doesn't strike me as fake, even if my voice doesn't always sound as "excited" as I mean for it to.

On the other hand, I rarely use multiple exclamation marks at the end of a sentence.

I do also have a tendency to use ellipses.

I use exclamation points if I'm wanting to convey across to the readers, a strong opinion or thought.

I think it's the case of the pretty natural autistic ambivalence, we don't want to seem too excited or committed about anything for fear of the reaction it might cause. I've found myself using "I guess" a lot at the end of statements and have noticed other people with AS doing it too.

It just depends on my mood. If I'm hyper, the exclaimation marks are out! (Heehee, I used them here) Otherwise I don't use them too much

If I was saying Congratuations, I probably would just not use punctuation. A period does seem sarcastic, but if if you use nothing, it's okay :D

I don't have any problems using them. But another Aspie said I shouldn't because "we shouldn't be too enthusiastic around NT's; NT's don't like it." So, another one of those things that some people think is an AS trait, and some think is an NT trait.
