Howdy,

Been a while since I was on. Thought I’d let yas know that after six months and a few shrink visits I have finally been convinced that I am HF AS as is my son.

I was diagnosed incidentally by a ped and followed it up from there, for the longest time I didn't want to be true and put it off and fluff. Anyway I've finally come around and embraced it, I still think there are an awful lot of people who assume they are aspies and abuse/use this to their advantage. I also thing there are a lot of non qualified people handing out diagnosis of Aspie when it simply isn't there. My nature is to question everything and unless I do the hard yards in research I am unlikely to defer to anyone’s judgement - My research tells me this is a classic Aspie trait.

I've reviewed a few of the "support" groups in my area.. but quite frankly as HF I don't have anywhere near the amount of issues as some of these people, they all seem to have a heap of issues at once, AS, Autism(s), Bi-Polar, OCD, Skitzo etc. and the drugs to go along with them.

I haven't been this happy in a long time - not because anything has changed but because of my understanding of myself and clues into perceived behaviour.

My wife and I are getting on like a house on fire - best we have since we first got together, she has embraced my diagnosis and altered her way of getting me to do things (lost of lists!!) I have in turn tried really hard not to get distracted after 15 seconds of what she is saying :P

My Work projects have become far more professional and I've developed a technique of reviewing my work which leads to far less mistakes (I have some type of Dysgraphia/Agraphia with my AS)

So yeah .. I'm out of the closet and looking to discover what other strengths I have that I’ve suppressed for my life.

Cheers man, I really don't know how important those groups are. My local one wants $50 a session .. and I guess thats just people sitting around a table talking about they feel (or don't)

I don't think its mine or many HF's cup of tea.

The one I go to, all it takes is donations. I am going to another one tomorrow but it's not the same group. I didn't see anything about the costs on the webiste so I assume it's free. I'll find out when I get there.

wow, I have never paid a dime to any of the Aspie support groups I have been to. We always got a meeting room at the hospital for free when they heard what we needed it for.

PS, Welcome home, Jol!

I assume it's the ASAN gathering here in Portland. Shame you aren't going to be there. I love meeting people from this forum.

So far I have met:

Furball333 (I think that's how you spell her username)
Anonymousanonymous
Cascadians

I think that's it. The other two I seen registered after meeting me. My bf had only posted once here.

Good for you. I would go to the local one too if there weren't any in my area and then all of a sudden someone started the gathering in my area. Better than driving 40 miles for the gathering.

Good for you 'Champ'. Happy for you and the family.

I see a few similarities in your acceptance process and confusion with others with Aspergers. I was dx 12 months ago and have just accepted it as the only possibilty. Therapy with an AS specialist has been a invaluable to understanding my life and buliding bridges with my wife and children.

So true, my wife tries very hard to understand and connect with me. I reciprocate the effort by buying flowers every Friday for her etc. Means nothing much to me, but her face lights up and she is in a good mood.

I agree with you in relation to all the medications thrown at people as first option(Lazy Drs) where as counselling and therapy should be first.

Good luck and wish you well
