My family is always pushing me to put myself in social situations, they always make me talk through the phone, and I hate it, I feel so nervous while doing so, the other day my mom told me to order a pizza, but I just couldn't, I always freak out on the phone (unless I'm talking to my parents or my best friend) and talking to strangers on the phone is just impossible for me.

Anyone else have this problem?
Any tips to solve it?

I don't fear the phone, it's more like a passionate hatred for it. Our phone rings so freakin' much I hear it even when I'm not at home!

I HATE the phone. I usually write (mentally or actually on paper) a script before I call anyone. And I always have a notepad so I can jot out what I want to say instead of interrupting, so I can wait till it is my turn to talk to say what I thought up.

I hate talking to people don't know over the phone, it makes me extremely axious and I feel like an idiot. I often have to have others make appointments or call customer support lines for me.

I hate answering the phone, but I don't mind using it for a specific purpose. It's the chit chat that I'm expected to engage in that I can't stand.

I'm NT, and I ALWAYS hated talking on the phone. I was otherwise VERY social, but I really felt self-conscious on the phone for some reason.

And guess how I paid my way through college? As a temp, and my usual jobs were as a receptionist. Ugh.

My husband used to make me call for pizza and make dinner reservations, purposely to get me over my phobia about using the phone. I still don't like it, but I can do it, and it doesn't bother me that much. But, given the chance, I will ALWAYS prefer Email to talking on the phone.

I have a dislike for the phone also. I hate answering it, and I usually hate talking on it. When I do talk on it, sometimes I will stutter. With some people it doesn't bother me to talk on the phone with them; but unfortunately it isn't the majority of the people I talk to.

Yeah...

Really hate talking to stranger by phone. No matter how many times I did that, it's still something uncomfortable for me.

That's exactly what I do, whenever possible.

I both fear and hate hearing/talking/listening to the phone. It always makes me jump, I dislike having to talk to people in any situation, and when I talk to friends/family I find the things we talk about extremely boring.

My grandmother (...in law) has this weird obsession with the phone though. She carries the portable one around with her everywhere she goes, hangs up on everyone that doesn't want to talk with her, and if anyone else answers the phone she gets upset...so I don't get to use it much anyway. x3

Umm...I'm NOT exactly "fearful" of talking on the phone persay...I just don't like it. Live conversation in English is no good for me. When I was a kid I just didn't like saying my own name for some reason, but I grew outta that phase before I turned 18. But...I still don't like calling people, NOT even people I know and love like my parents or my grandmothers. My one grandmother doesn't have email so I gotta send her postal letters. All my other family members, my other grandmother and all...have email.

I really prefer to stick with websites and email. I've always liked email. The TTY employs written English and is still widely used by speech-impaired people regardless of the videophone movement among the Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing who sign. I still own a TTY & use it like, for example, when my internet's not working and I gotta call tech support. But all other times...I don't want anything to do with it NOR a regular phone. Websites and email employ written English too, but they are like leaving messages...they're NOT live conversation. When I've had to get up early like to go to work...I'm NO more comfortable with live conversation in written English as I would be in spoken English.

These days, I'm only comfortable with live conversation in American Sign Language. But due to my visual processing deficits, I can only read it in-person. So that really doesn't work for telecommunications, except if I could gain access to DBRS even though I'm NOT physically Deaf-Blind. Even then, if the CF (communication facilitator) I use is hearing using a cell phone, I will hear both sides of the conversation and become distracted, so then it doesn't even help me. I gotta only use a DEAF CF using a videophone that way the VRS interpreter signs what the caller says, I DON'T hear either voice, and the Deaf CF just "copy-signs" what the VRS interpreter signs so that I can read it either visually close-up or tactually like the Deaf-Blind do. But...the DBRS providers may require proof that all users are physically Deaf-Blind, and in that case I don't gain access.
