I was wondering something about the presence of so-called low-functioning autistics on the Internet. In how much are they active on the Internet and are there articles that they have written that I can read? Can you even get in touch with them?

I know of a couple on this Site.

There were probably more "low-functioning" people on this Site in previous years, though.

One of them, who has not posted in a while, was quite articulate as to autism rights. She also had a great love for chickens.

Another was brutally honest about everything, including his desire for a man.

I miss both of them.

What happened that they aren't anymore?

Are there other autism boards that could help me answer this question?

I know of a "low-functioning" forum--but one has to have that sort of diagnosis (and prove it). One could be a caregiver of one (and prove it).

I miss both of these members as well. What happened to them?

Of the two members kraftie mentions, I don't think I know of the second one, but the first one I do know and I miss her too. She was an amazing person. She was very informed, informative, she knew her stuff regarding autism and activism. She was one of the best assets of this whole site, and one of the people who impressed me the most when I first got here.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the reasons she stopped posting started with a member here kinda-sorta questioning her diagnosis. Things got out of hand and feelings were hurt. It affected her badly and I can't blame her for not wanting to engage anymore, although I wish she would come back.

I found a site that has a list of blogs written mostly by non-verbal autistics. I get confused as to what constitutes low functioning, but non-verbal is, right?

There's not really an official definition of low-functioning. It's kind of a label doctors put on you when they want to emphasize your disability rather than your talents. (They use high-functioning for the opposite reason, when they want to minimize your disability and emphasize your talents. This isn't always a good things, such as in, "Too high-functioning to need that kind of help.")

I do wish we had more people who are extremely autistic, or who don't speak, or who are intellectually disabled. I feel like we are missing a section of the spectrum. I know there are more people with mild autism, but there are still proportionally more mild cases here than there are in the world at large.

If we could just get it through our heads that smart does not equal superior--and I mean really get it through our heads, not just pay it lip service.

Fabulous list of blogs. Very entertaining and informative. Are all of them by the person themselves? But yeah, still looking for a way to make contact.

From what I've read, there are some that emphasize that they themselves write the posts and like Carly's have pictures of themselves, or video, as a way to prove it to the disbelieving.
