Panic panicccccc fit in now fit you must fit like a jigsaw puzzle. Anyone else happy you didn't follow the trends? If only people knew what kids were doing these days. I'm very sure they wouldn't tell their kids to fit in.

Are you happy you didn't fit in with certain situations?

I've never understood trends at all. Why wear something you don't like, or that makes you uncomfortable, just because it's trendy? There's no logic in it.

I've never followed trends, really because 99% of the time, I think they're hideous.

In the UK right now, at least where I am, the current clothing trend is skinny jeans, with pumps and oversized coats with no shape to them. Am I the only one who absolutely cannot understand this trend at all? It makes people look so out of proportion. I thought fashion was about making you look good?

Seeing my parents wedding photos from 1975, I can assure you that despite his appearance (kipper tie, four-inch platforms, massive lapels, flares) my father thought he looked killer back then.

People define how good they look by what other people look like. These days, with the world broken up into mutually loathing subcultures, wearing the exact same clothes as your 'social group' would make you 'look good' despite (and maybe even because of) how utterly ridiculous you look to those outside it.

Or : "I wanna be my own person with my own identity!" How? "By being just like my friends!"

Our lack of concern for social superficialities is on of the great benefits of being an aspie, we can focus on the more substantial parts of existence.

I dunno, I don't really follow fads, but I do understand them. Malcom Gladwell's book 'The Tipping Point' explains the logic of them pretty well. It's a really good book.

There's also the status and wealth display stuff, i.e. 'I can afford to buy totally new clothes each month, to stay in fashion'. Wealth display has always been a big factor with fashion. That's why in the past, fat voluptious women were considered attractive, since only those who were wealthy could afford to sit on their ass all day eating to get that way; but now slender is attractive, since only the rich can afford the plastic surgery or the time to spend hours in in a gym with a personal trainer. Of course, people who aren't rich also try to get that super body, but the reason it's considered attractive is because that's how rich people look.

It really doesn't matter in the long run. In high school it's a big deal, but afterward people don't care as much, at least in my experience.

that's one of the pleasures of being middle-aged...you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody...;)

I kinda danced around with it when I was younger. It was mainly to impress the lasses...but it didn't make much difference...;)

Wow.

That was a trend when I was a teenager.

I like wearing my Nike Air tennis shoes... I'm more about comfort and practicality...

I know alot of people are wearing the Ked-type sneakers now. They don't have the cushioning and comfort that my Nike's have... I can't see myself wearing those... Unless they are more comfortable than they look.. I remember Keds where kindof thin.. not the super thick soles that Nike have for instance..

Also, alot of people like to wear trendy designer socks.. and will be a dozen pairs ALL different.. For the sake of matching, I like to get all of my socks the same.. If I had 12 pairs of totally different socks, I might only end up with 6 pairs of socks.. because for some mysterious reason, socks seem to vanish in the dryer.. At least if they were all alike, I'd have alot more pairs of socks..

I get attached to clothes, so I get things like suede or something that will last through time and hopefully last through some fashion trends..

Conformity is normal, anti-conformity is just as normal. Independence is where it's at. I've always been independent in terms of fashion. I wear anything that's comfortable and fits me and looks fairly nice. Sometimes it coincides with the current fashion and sometimes it doesn't.

I'm not bothered about current trends at all so I don't even know what they are, but, to be honest, they're not that important in the long run. Friends who judge you by the clothes you wear are not friends at all.

A lot of what I wear is 'trendy' now, thank goodness, but it's more because fashion has come around to my preferences, rather than vice versa. ;)

I just love bright clothes. Always have, always will. Suddenly colour is in and black is out (unless you're emo?!) and clashing colours are even more in, and it's suiting me just fine. ;)

This thread has a very nebulous topic, but on the subject of trends in clothing, I have to say that what bugs me the most are people who think they are not conforming but in fact they are falling right into the same trap. Like goths and punks. They think they are being rebellious, but they are just posers. That's why I have always valued the "not giving a ****" approach. My dad, who could quite possibly be an aspie himself, instilled that in me. He is a doctor, but he typically wears old sweatshirts and old, faded jeans with tennis shoes. The only way to avoid conforming that I have found is to avoid putting ANY effort into your clothes whatsoever. Of course, lots of people will think you're weird, but those who "get it" (surprisingly few) will think you a hero for transcending the ridiculousness of our society's fashion trends. And by not putting ANY effort into your clothes, I mean owning 1-2 pairs of shoes and wearing jeans and t-shirts you've owned since the 8th grade every day.
