Everytime I get up in the morning, I space out. I've had to get up earlier than I usually do b/c of this. I'll sit outside or on the couch drinking coffee and just stare into space. I don't even think when I'm doing it. I've now tried to be more cautious of this. I use to get into trouble for doing this and wasn't aware of it at the time. It happens mostly when I get up from sleep or in the afternoon. I wonder if it's an aspie trait since aspergers is suppose to be a neurological thing. Anyone else do this a lot? or Know what I'm talking about?

Well, yes, I space out. What is really annoying is when I am thinking about something, and someone is trying to talk to me, and i seem to be paying attention, but I am so wrapped up in my thoughts that the outside world ceases to exist, and I can't remember anything the other person has been saying. It is very upsetting for others and to me. I am usually unaware of it until I "come back" from my thoughts and realize I have missed everything said for the past few minutes. I slip into this from time to time and have no control over it. Some people can't understand this, and think it means I don't value what they are saying. Anyone else like this?

I space out way too often. It doesn't matter what I am doing, once in a while my brain just takes a leave of absence, this can be quite confusing when you "wake up" again and have little to no idea what is going on.

I also space out in the mornings... I think your brain is still in that hypnotic alpha-wave state or whatever.

Yes,it's also an autie thing as it's something am do very often.

The autism specialist speech therapist am used to see said that most people [nt or not] space out,but people with autism, aspergers or adhd space out a lot more.

Maybe go to doctor to make sure it isn't abscence seizures that are going on,but spacing out is normal for Autism,AS and ADHD and human in general.

MC.....I think the spacing is a way that some of us cope with trying to process a little too much information.

It's like when I'm listening to a radio station on my computer and the voice stops......and then picks up again in midsentence a few seconds later.

My computer had to pause and space out for a few seconds because it couldn't do whatever it was doing and also process all the information that fast.

Unfortunately, since I'm not a computer.....I usually miss some information.

It seems to me that spacing is a healthy way to cope when too much information is coming in too fast.

It's logical that it would hit right after waking up, as your body sort of gets into gear for the demands of the day.

So, I regard some of the spacing as normal.

What I really hate is when I ask somebody a question and then space (or just get distracted by something else I'm thinking about) during their answer and actually MISS the whole answer.

Then I have to try to figure out how I'm going to explain THAT.

I think there are different kinds of "spacing," but that's a couple of things that I experience.

Whoa!!

I though this was just me! I space out in the mornings. I get up about 2 hours before class starts everyday because I do this. I sit in one of our recliners for about thirty minutes and space out. Then I get into to the shower, and I space out there too. When I space out, I completely tune out the rest of the world.

I even space out while I'm driving yet I stay safe on the road and I still go where I want to. When I come back to reality, I don't remember the trip at all.

I space out during math class...
Funny as it seems, I still have maintained a decent C all year.
But, Unlike you, I think when I'm doing it. the gears, whistles, and bolts of my brain start turning at this time, because I'm thinking of Ideas to game development tasks I must complete.
I am currently working on a game called DYLAN'S ADVENTURES 3, and that's usually what I think about. I've started programming computer games at a very unusual age.

In fact, I'm still too young to be a game developer. BUT I'M STILL DOIN IT!! !

Actually, I think when I space out too. I also think about game development ideas, but I'm thinking more of the storyline than the actual game mechanics. I want to get into storyboarding.

I think the phenomenon is called microsleep - according to wikipedia "an episode of sleep lasting from a fraction of a second up to several seconds":

Quote:
People who experience microsleeps usually remain unaware of them, instead believing themselves to have been awake the whole time, or feeling a sensation of 'spacing out'. One example is called "gap driving": from the perspective of the driver, he or she was driving a car, and then suddenly realizes that several seconds have passed by unnoticed. It is not obvious to the driver that he was asleep during those missing seconds, although this is in fact what happened.

I've noticed that there are days - for instance when I'm cleaning my flat - when time seems to go slowly, and other days when time just flies by. I've often wondered whether this feeling might be due to episodes of microsleep.

I space out too and don't usually realise I have spaced out until I have stopped doing so. There are times when I enter my own little world and receive no contact from the real world. Other times, I just stare into space and sometimes at people (accidentally).

I, on the other hand, never space out.

I just... can't? As in 'space out' = don't realise what's going on/forget my surroundings. Never happens for me, never has.

I know it's normal to at least space out sometimes. (NTs do so annoyingly often.)

But I don't/can't.

I always figured that was due to autism, but it seems I was totally wrong. Now I don't know any more.

One extreme case I had was in a math class. I was writing names down for no reason. I didn't really think about it until after some moments I looked at my math assignment and couldn't believe what I just did. I didn't even recognize the names. I remember writing them down but I don't know why esp on a math paper. My mom said she had many similar incidents of drawing or writing without being really aware of it at the time that it was done.

There was one time I spaced out in history class and actually PASSED out! Our boring teacher was talking about something and I spaced out. I remember my vision suddenly going black. When I woke up, I was falling out of my seat and couldn't catch myself in time to keep from hitting the floor. The guy behind me said I just dropped like a rock. It was humiliating at the time, but looking back it, it's actually quite funny. At least some people asked me if I was alright.

For a while, I was worried something was wrong with me, but it never happened again.
