If you are having a bad dream its very simple to get out of one. In takes two easy steps:

A) close your eyes.

B) then open your eyes.

If you close your eyes in a dream things go black. And then when you open your eyes in a dream your real eyes really open up, and you wake up safe and sound in your bead. Discovered that by accident when I was like eight years old when I would have frequent dreams about falling off tall buildings (seeing the pavement coming up at you causes your eyes to shut as part of bracing yourself for the impact- and when the impact fails to happen you open your eyes).

About curing recurring nightmares-thats a different subject.

But dont ignore the dumb and simple for explanations for nightmares. You may not have enough blankets when you go to bed. This causes your body to tense up when you're asleep (response to the cold). Then tenseness of your body may cause your mind to concoct narratives around the tenseness. Which results in stories about you fleeing monsters, or whatever. Also-dont forget to take a leak before you go to bed!

But nightmares might be the result of something more complicated. Health problems, or some pyschological issues you're having.

But before worrying about all that heavy stuff-first try putting more blankets on your bed.

I have had nightmares about being chased and thrown off the Oxford Road Bridge onto the Inner Distribution Road by thugs, being beaten by my father and having acid thrown in my face. One nightmare I dreamt that I was being thrown around the bedrrom and I could not stop it from happening and also being hunted by the police for a crime I didn't commit. I also hate the next day when I still feel I am partially in a particularly bad dream after I have woken up and a caffeine drink when I wake up helps me break down the residual DMT.

I don't know of there's all that much you can do really.
Some of the nightmares I've had have made me wake up in a cold sweat, heart pounding, and the they have stayed with me for a while. But for the most part, I have used nightmares to make reactions credible in the stories I used to write, and sometimes I even got plot ideas from them.

Depending on what you dream of, just remind yourself that it's not real.

I have some categories of nightmares:

- being chased or persecuted by teenagers, men, neo nazis, terrorists, criminals...

- being sexually molested

- seeing loved ones (family, pets) sick, injured, beaten etc (sometimes graphic)

- becoming sick or injured myself

- war, nukes

- terror (lots of terror nightmares lately)

Just last night I dreamt that my country was attacked. There were soldiers in beige fatigues in the streets and I heard them talking about terrorists. A plane with a VIP landed just by my building and I was afraid it would be attacked. If that plane blew up, my home would be destroyed. Not a lot happened, but in the dream I went from being nervous to being afraid.

The best way to fight nightmares is redirecting them in imagination after you wake up.

You should recall the whole dream and change it. If you got killed by someone - you imagine you found a weapon and successfully protected yourself. If you died because of falling from a high place - you imagine you suddenly started to fly or hold to something and survived. And if you can't figure out any way to prevent your dream character dieing - let it die and imagine what happens next. Being a ghost is fun too.

The nightmares either disappear or you learn to automatically find solutions to dangerous situations in dreams so nightmares wont be so scary anymore. You might even come to like them. As I do.

I no longer die in my nightmares and even if I die something fun happens next. All because of my imaginary practicing. I learned automatic reactions to danger in dreams. I don't have Lucid Dreams but I don't need them. I have enough control over myself and the dream environment without owning Gods powers and knowledge I am dreaming. Even without it when someone attacks me I successfully escape or fight him and I can even tease or kill him. And when I am about to fall I come to remember I can fly or something makes me light like a feather.

Sometimes I actually look for danger in my dreams because I know I will deal with it, somehow. I never know how I am going to do it. I take situation how it comes and figure my way out when I see what the actual danger is. I know I am going to succeed or die and if I die it won't be an end anyway so it's fine too so I am not scared. And I consider most of characters in my dreams weak cowards that I need to protect because I am braver and stronger than them so if there is a danger I go to eliminate it so someone else won't be the victim.

And I also befriended some dangerous beings. My best friend as well as teacher in dreams is The Devil and The Grim Reaper is my equal although she doesn't think this way. She just thinks I am an overly curious human.
They were my enemies at first but they learned I am stronger than it seems. 8)

The recent nightmare I had was about planes falling from the sky - someone was shooting them down. I remember I was afraid what might happen if one falls close by and at the very next moment one actually did, right in my garden. There was a huge blow and my house shaken as if there was an earthquake. My fear disappeared. "Oh, I see. That's what happens. Pretty cool, it even caused an earthquake." - I thought and went out with some bandages to check if there are any survivors. There was some dead people but I managed to save two lives. It was unpleasant experience but I woke up proud of myself because I didn't panic and I did what I could to help.
