Last night as I was going to bed, I came up with the idea of a Ten Commandments for people with Asperger's syndrome. Here it goes:

1. Thou shalt stim.

2. Thou shalt use excessively formal and verbose language to speak thy mind.

3. Thou shalt focus narrowly on an obscure subject.

4. Thou shalt speak only in a monotone, even when excited.

5. Thou shalt make many faux pas on a first date.

6. Thou shalt wear shorts in November because it feels comfortable.

7. Thou shalt only eat unleavened bread. BECAUSE!

8. Thou shalt be oblivious to all celebrity gossip.

9. Thou shalt lack all tact and subtlety in delicate situations.

10. Thou shalt always be misunderstood—and not as an angsty teenager is.

Stims are self-stimulating mannerisms, or stereotypic movements. They are different from the compulsive rituals of obsessive-compulsive disorder, which are to alleviate the anxiety induced from an obsessional thought or image, and also different from the tics of Tourette's syndrome, which are uncontrollable urges to perform a certain motor or vocal behavior.

Stims stimulate and soothe the mind. They allow aspies to either reach an optimal level of sensory stimulation or allow them to take their focus off distracting stimuli with a repetitive stim. Everyone, even NTs, stim every once in a while; but aspies stim more and sometimes have more awkward and noticeable stims. Here are some common stims:

  • Twiddling one's thumbs
  • Shaking one's leg/Tapping one's foot
  • Flapping one's hands
  • Rocking back and forth or from side to side
  • Pacing
  • Chewing
  • Making noises
  • Self-injurious stims (more in low-functioning autism)

I always thought "stimming" was a term made by normal people to denigrate the activities?

BTW, what if I choose to disagree with the monotonic stuff? Will I be smited?

What if thou art an Aspie angsty teenager? Shalt thou be misunderstood in one way above the other, or shall thou hold only the Aspie way of being minsunderstood above all other ways of being misunderstood, and forsake those other ways to focus only on the Aspie way, even unto perseveration, O wise one?

Thou shall tell the truth, even when it hurts and it is not what people want to hear.

What is "unleavened bread"?

And I wear pants in November... Which is just as weird as Shorts in November where you live...

November being near the beginning of Summer down here...

And I don't talk in a monotone voice... Well not that I know of... :: asks his mailinglist of friends ::
A response to that may or may not come...

Anyways, good job NH. I like your... Aspie lists... of which I've seen two :D

The list is great but how about this one......

Thou shalt turneth thy phone ringer off lest thy santuary be defiled when the noise maketh thee jumpeth up thy ceiling.

Remember the hard drive's 1.5gb memory and keep it holy.

Thou shalt not kill they that uttereth the "R" word.

To be honest I've never been called a 'ret*d'.
Probably a good thing given my response when people call other people ret*ds...

You're lucky. Kids at school started calling me that (among other things) before I even knew what it meant. They also kept saying, "You need to go to CDC", which was the special education program in our district. I could never understand why.

I seem to be very lucky throughout my school years...Always had friends, never bullied excessively... Something that's annoyed me oddly... I don't feel like a true Aspie, not having gone through such rites of passage heh...

I never was bullied much either but a lot of that was that I lived on a block full of relitives and went to a small private school where no one was bullied for long.
