You know of Harriet Tubman and her underground railroad that smuggled slaves to the north?

I actually thought - until very recently that it was a literal underground railroad (subterranean tunnels with tracks and boxcars and everything).

It took an episode of Family Guy to enlighten me. Peter discovered a hole in the floor revealing the underground railroad and it was a model train and the guy he was talking to said it wasn't underground nor a railroad.

me, too. funny. I was always confused by this as well. yet, it was a secret passageway where slaves were led to freedom. why would they call it an underground railroad? if it's not then, why a railroad? Some things don't make a bit of sense and defy my sense of logic.

railroads were being built at the time. maybe? still seems kind of weird--they weren't under the ground.

I'd guess that 'underground' refers to its secrecy, not its actual location. You know, like an underground movement or something.

That makes a lot of sense....

Of course you would think that unless you knew the actual story. I'm surprised you didn't learn about it in school though.

they might have tried teaching that to us. They didn't call it speshul ed for nuthin.

And, when I heard that there was a Subway being built downtown in our fairly small community when I was a teen I literally thought that they were putting in an actual subway, not the restaurant. When I made a comment about our town not being big enough for a subway all my friends laughed at me.

FUNNY! I even did a REPORT about it in school, and got a good grade! I don't think they EVER went into a lot of detail. But YEAH, all reports about it were that it was SECRET(obviously), and the term underground can refer to that, though I am sure they DID have tunnels! And they had various secret stops, that I am sure were akin to railroad stops, though they MIGHT have used mine cars on min tracks that are like a railroad.

Still, *I* found the name confusing, and it WAS "covered" in school, and I even did a report on it.

BTW Back then, libraries and a few books were all I could get. The internet wasn't open yet, etc...

As for family guy, I don't think that is EXACTLY what they said, but it exaggerates everything, etc.... ANYWAY!

I had heard of safe houses along the way,i thought the train must stop and they came above ground to go to the houses.I thought it would of been better to just stay on the train and go all the way there .

I thought the same thing, too. Even after finding out what it really was, the mental image was forever there.

I fell for something earlier today.
I'm going down to London in a few days time as I do regularly to see family and my dad said that while we're down there he wanted to go a place called The Movieum which he told me is the museum of the lisp. Until he mentioned a few hours later that it was a movie history museum I thought that he was serious. I was expecting exhibits on Jonathon Ross and working models of mouths that do/don't lisp when they speak.
For someone who is normally suspicious of everything and has never fallen for a con trick I definitely felt stupid (and it's certainly not the first time i've misunderstood something like that, not even close to the first time).
