Hello, my name is Jacob Allen, and I am a 6th grader in school. I am 11 years old, and I have Asperger syndrome, and I have had many problems with the issues it generates. I have severe sensory issues, and attention issues. If you want to hear what I had to go through after I was diagnosed in 5th grade, don't be afraid to ask. And I don't have a problem with you asking because I know what it is like to be a student with an Autism Spectrum disorder or Autism, and I know how hard it is for parents with kids who have these disorders, and I think you'll understand, unlike most of the neurotypical world I am used to.

Anyway, I'll tell you a bit about myself. I know about everything there is to know about computers, and my knowledge of this History of the Personal Computer has made my interactive exhibit a finalist in a 4-H contest. I am widely known around my school as a computer expert, and I would probably not consider myself as a nerd, but an educated person. Every day, people ask me for my advice. They ask what would be the most appropriate PC, they ask me for help on schoolwork completed on computers, and my technology teacher and librarian appointed me to the manager of the laptop carts we use at school for portability. I also use computers for schoolwork. I think kids who are on the spectrum can find a major talent in computers, and I think it can help them be creative. I desire to open a software company specializing in creativity tools for kids on the spectrum once I become a freshman in college.

I would like to get to know members of this site, and I would like everyone to know that the people here understand.

Jacob

I don't see a choice marked "Significant Other".

The Missus doesn't quite believe I have it, even when I point out something like my obsession with Ferraris. She'll say, 'oh, it's a hobby-thing with you'.

Welcome Jacob :)

My son who is 5 years old has autism and his father refuses to believe there is anything wrong.
Poppa (grand-dad) is getting better at tolerating him. I have gotten alot better at accepting different aspects of autism and how they affect my son.
My son (Damien) loves buses, trains, numbers. Has attention problems (pysch suspects ADD) and alot of sensory issues.

You know, you are right. I think I should have put one there. Sometimes, it could be that...for example, your parent's co-workers who don't know.

If "The Missus" doesn't believe you have it, then you might need to show your diagnosis papers. She'll think you were being legitimate all along. Or, have you not been diagnosed yet?

Welcome to WP, Jacob.

My choice is obviously the last, as no person has ever understood my AS.

BTW, I'm into computers too, since my fives.

I've been using computers since I was 1 and a half. We bought a IBM Aptiva a year before I was born. My teacher before school was Windows 95. Now, I know about everything on computers. My favorite operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, and Ubuntu Linux.

IBM Aptiva was a remarkably quick machine for a 64mb 8O

Welcome!
I am the mother of a 9 year old with HFA, who's into animals, pokemon and maths. Little he doesn't know about platypusses, hamsters and sloths!
We try our best to understand his autism.
I think it is great you've joined WP.

When I set up my second modem, it took me 1 hour before I gave up, then 2 more. It was on an old 180MHz Pentium.
