Autism and associated conditions together we need to persuade the government and local decision makers to make a difference in improving the lives of people on the autism spectrum, the majority of whom do not receive the support and services they need. Often being told what to do by people who do not understand what it’s really like themselves. Please think twice before prejudging or discriminating against me, excluding me from society - I have rights too.
But for now each individual has a right to choose which labels we consider useful and appropriate, and which we reject as divisive and damaging. Eventually I hope society will become so tolerant, inclusive and diverse that "autistic" will not be needed as a label, I think it’s helpful to know that a person does not think the same as an NT so allowances can be made.
But until each and every human being will be respected, valued and accommodated as an individual. I will continue to help if only a little and maybe we should all unite under the label "autistic" and fight for our rights together. Otherwise society will continue to misjudge and stigmatize what they do not fully understand.
I know what a lonely planet this can be and I also know what it’s like not to know: Autism spectrum, you must be joking not me. Was trying to think of my first reactions when found out at first was a little confused and very sad, for all the unnecessary years of confused chaotic chaos, but at the same time it really was like a revelation to at last be able to understand, me.
But there is one thing I feel we all agree on and that’s lots more support and understanding is needed, if you can maybe help to spread the word, just tell a family member, friend, neighbor - spread the word .. if everyone does a little bit I know it will eventually make a huge different.
