So i have always had a hard time with lots of noise around me. Usually it just gives me headache and makes me wanna just get away.

But yesterday, it seems like it just became too much for me. I just couldn't stand it, everything was almost spinning around for me, i just wanted to break out in tears and have some peace.

I got home and i was restless like never before. I couldn't stand voices, my father's voice felt so bad to me.

So i went to sleep early. It was really nice to lay in a dark room with a blanket over me.
I expected to go back to school today. But i can't make myself. I still feel a bit spinny and confused from yesterday. But i can't cope with the idea that i have to go back to that noisy place.

Do anybody have the same kind of experiences and maybe would care to share a few tips? Id appreciate it very much.

Well, the first thing that sprang to my mind was good old fashioned ear plugs; but those wouldn't really be practical in the school setting.

If you're really desperate, I'd recommend looking into the practice of meditation. It's given a bad hype by its spiritual association, but the core practice is to find a nice quiet place in your mind where you can shut out the outside world. Best of all, it can be done simply by focusing on your breathing. Whether your school knows about your sound sensitivity or not, no one will question you taking a few extra deep breaths each day.

Look into it: you'll either have found a good solution, or wasted 2 minutes reading this.

I have a touch-texture sensitivity (touching certain fabrics causes the sensation of fire) that's pretty hard to manage, especially because I'm still covert about my diagnosis. I get around it by wearing a bandana, and using it as a makeshift glove if I have to pick up something bad. That really doesnt help you, but the aforementioned suggestion of meditation might.

Good Luck, if you need resources, pst me and I'll help you out.

I have this problem too. I always carry earplugs, sometimes I put them in half-way so that I can still hear important sounds but block out the more annoying quieter ones. Also, having an ipod/mp3 player (I personally still have a discman  ) is also really helpful, and you can adjust the volume as needed.

I can't wear earplugs. :( Apparently, it's a sensory type thing. They make my ears and face feel like they're literally on fire. I've tried several different kinds and they all cause the same problem.

I've thought about those things you wear over your ears like headphones that block out sound. But that doesn't help when I want to go to sleep. I must sleep on my side and those things would just get in the way.

I think I need to get my own private island.

My doctor and I have just been discussing this because I've been having problems with it and it's causing me to "tune out" and just retreat into my own little world.

Some things we discussed:
- time-out breaks to relax, meditate, listen to mp3 player, or whatever
- when I said I couldn't wear earplugs, we decided that perhaps I could just wear my noise-reducing earphones from my mp3 player without the music (trying this next week)
- leaving classes five minutes early so that I get to the next class first, letting me choose the location that will bother me least in terms of sensitivities (sound, light, etc.)
- talking to professor in case some of the issues can be mitigated
- arranging to get notes if you have to leave a class for an extended break

I find a stim that I can engage in. When I have no choice but to be in an environment that is too much for me, I use one of my own stims to center myself.

I had to quit a job where they had a speaker over my head and wouldn't disconnect it (like what is a speaker doing in a call center..?????). It felt like my head was on fire. Literally like my scalp was burning. So I get that.

Earplugs have been a boon to me....

As for sleeping, sometimes I use a white noise machine (they play waves or rain) to sleep if my ears are hurting from the plugs. But you have to be careful, because I can pick up where the loop is on the recording, and then I focus on it and go crazy.....sometimes a really long relaxing cd....they have them that are almost aimless....they are very relaxing in high stimulus environments.

Good luck...I know how difficult it is.

That's strange, I'm very sensative to loud noises but can't understand what someone is saying I found out for me that it's an auditory process disorder.

As for the noise, :x I sometime clinch my teeth if I have no choice. Other times I use earplugs or IPODS even though IPODS are noisey since I have songs downloaded onto them, it calms me down.

For sleep, I use a fan. My dad thinks this is crazy I thought it was too until I came to this site. So you're not the only one with this trouble.

That's one big reason why I don't like to go shopping or get out into the noise. :(
