I have noticed my little autie starting to count as he does things. Like counting how many times he stirs his milo (choc drink) and how many times he turns the soap when washing his hands. I have not yet noticed any particular number.
So help me out you knowledgable peoples, is the counting an autie trait or an OCD one??????

does he do it out of routine [he's gotten used to doing it that way] or does he think something bad is going to happen if he doesn't do it that way?

I've read that a lot of people who have autism also have OCD (among others). I am one of them.

I know that when I start counting it's an OCD thing and usually indicates that I'm very worried/stressed about something.

I asked a few others and they suggested it could be because the spoon/soap is turning (like spinning) and he loves counting. My conclusion that is probably is more ASD than OCD but I will ask Paediatician on Monday.

I THINK it might be both. I sometimes STILL do it! I just find I am counting and try to stop. It is annoying for the person doing the counting, but what is the problem?

Apparently the difference is that OCD is painful/unpleasant to the person doing the ritual, whereas rituals which cause pleasure or are soothing fascinating etc are perhaps AS, and in which case there is no problem.

Ask your son how he feels about it, if he enjoys it. :)
