Okay. I have this problem. I'm having a strange sensitivity to light and bright colors. I liked it when it's dark in a classroom, but when there's so much light, it hurts to the point where it drives me crazy. The teacher can make the room a little dimmer so it's more comfortable, not surprising since they can't change the enviorment for one person.

When I looked it up, I was frustrated to discover that this is connected with AS. It could be something else. I could go to the doctor but my insurance was cancelled recently and I don't have any money to go to the doctor.

What should I do? The lights are driving me nuts.

Wear photochromatic lenses. Maybe they are not called that now though, but glasses that darken when it gets brighter. Helps a bit.

Many people with AS and similar syndromes have sensitivity to light and bright colors. My colleagues often joke with me about living in a cave because I rarely turn the florescent lights on in my office and will also close the blinds if it's too bright outside. I sometimes wear sunglasses indoors, but it's usually not that bright in most of the buildings I'm in.

People who wear bright colors are people I tend to avoid, because looking at them isn't a very pleasant experience. I broke up with a girlfriend because she wore brightly colored socks, despite me explaining my sensitivity to bright colors and asking her not to wear them around me.

I don't like bright lights, although to be honest the sound of fluorescent lights drives me much crazier than the light. I don't turn lights on to move around at night, and I like to spend some time in my room with the blinds drawn after I've spent a day at school or work. I was able to afford the darkening glasses one year (I get prescription glasses each year), and they were fabulous - I'm doing it again as soon as I have the money.

Oh, and when I was little, I wanted to be a vampire. A vampire geneticist.

I'm sensitive to some kind of lights and not to others. You should see which lights you tolerate more. But I'm more sensitive to sounds than to lights, loud noises make me freeze and I can't think, and repetitive tiny noises like a clock's ticking makes me uneasy (I can't stop moving, like a caged lion)

I like to think aspies are like vampires since I love vampires a lot! Haha.

But anyways, I'm sensitive to bright lights too. Like, when I go outside and the sun's too bright I have trouble keeping my eyes open.

Aspies like vampires? I guess that's because we're basically indestructible and live for hundreds of years.

Little known facts: Aspies do not reflect in mirrors and dislike garlic.

Have to say i was a bit surprised to find light sensitivity in the list of symptoms as well as thats always been a problem for me. Ironically i've constantly been accused of being a vampire given im pretty pale to the point where i look like i'll spontaneously combust in direct sunlight, not a fan of garlic, got a real strong disliking for religion and churches so i wont be bathing in holy water any time soon, not too crazy about being set on fire or stabbed through the heart with a sharp piece of wood for that matter either :P

There only one way to prove that you are a vampire.

Test 1#

See if you can drink a pint of blood. If you drink it, you passed.

Test 2#

Grab and stare at the crucifix. If you can't stare at the crucifix for more than one second, you passed.

Test 3#

Go to a local Catholic church that have holy water. Ask a priest for a bottle of holy water to use. They might give it to you.

Next. Take the holy water and splatter yourself. If it steam and burn your skin, you passed.

Test 4#

Go to a local supermarket, if you spot and avoid the garlic, you passed.

This is a good vampire test! Have fun!

No big problems with bright light.

I like enough light on my workspace, it makes it easier to work. Around it it can be dark, that is a bit frowned upon by some people.

But tube lights are not a favourite of mine, some types buzz. At home I use old fashioned bulb lights and reflector lights. I prefer them to modern low-energy bulbs (which are also fluorescent lights).

You should read this webcomic, www.lastblood.net, it's a vampire comic with a really good twist ;)

Actually, they can change the environment in a classroom for one person as long as it does not seriously impact anyone else's learning in a negative way. You can have it written into your IEP that they must dim the lights in some way. They can also give you a modified carroll. It's basically a box without a front side and a bottom that allows you to sit in a "separate room" in a way. But if it's part of your IEP that you are AS diagnosed, they have to make reasonable modifications. Especially if light sensitivity is one of your sensory issues.
