I was lucky enough to see this documentary on Channel 5 yesterday about an autistic man called Stephen Wiltshire, he is a Savant and can draw extraordinary pictures from just memory. In this programme, he drew a panoramic view of London exactly correct, from just a short helicopter ride...

I have admired his work for some time, it was a good program :)

It appears his web site is a little overwhelmed at the moment, try later.

WOW!! ! Amazing!! Society truly should embrace those who are different neurologically, it is fascinating and a gift and testament to what the human mind can do if wired in such a way.. People should embrace autistics in general instead of attacking us with cruelty for being different.

I, myself, have been ridiculed and set-up for worse humiliation simply because I was born differently.. I am a musician and have been told I'm gifted.. but because of so much negativity and having my creativity stifled, I ended up doing pretty hard labor for years and years.. I'm now to the point where nothing is going to stop me.. I just have to get over being depressed from years of "persecution" by people who didn't understand me.. "Persecution" is meant not to be taken to the extreme as someone who imagines they are being persecuted, as in "persecution complex", but more in the way of being humiliated and treated pretty cruelly by many people throughout most of my life who just flat out did not understand me...

It's so wonderful to see an autistic person excel and be recognized and appreciated for being different... I LOVE stories like this!! !

Thank you :)

Yes, I know, He is an absolutely extraordinary man, which suits the telivision series he appeared in(extraordinary people). Thanks for telling me about his website, I must've forgotten to look it up on Google, Mind you it wouldn't have mattered, even if I'd remembered I probably still wouldn't be able to get onto his website. He probably didn't expect that many viewers of the programme to be intrested in him...

I've watched that before. His nickname, "the human camera", is totally fitting. 8O

I saw this too. Some of the reporting was a bit dubious, eg they said something along the lines of 'learning to communicate is so unusual in people with autism,' but Stephen's ability to draw so accurately from memory is just mindblowing.

The next instalment of Extraordinary People, by the way, is 'Half Man Half Tree' on Monday at the same time. Should be entertaining.

I saw that documentary. Though it was an excellent portrayal of Stephen Wiltshire, it repeated stereotypes about autism. Such as that he was locked in an autistic world as a toddler, and that drawing was the key that unlocked his world.
