At times I feel like a real loser posting on this forum. I tell myself it helps to understand my son better, then I think what am I doing?

Most of you are kids (according to the poll)-I'm a professional, much older--anyone else relate?

I can't imagine anyone I associate with, my colleagues, posting on here.

Who are y'all? What do you do? Are you mostly students?

btw--it does help to read and understand patterns of thinking to gain insights into my eight-year old. Sometimes, admittedly, I find some threads hilarious.

thx--equinn

I'm 38 and I'm a professional. There are many adults on here. Some are just kids. I think you can tell some of the ones because they talk about their schools, etc. So, that's kind of a give away. I know others who are professionals and post here. It just depends on what forum you are on as well.

I have a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education with a major in special needs. I work with high school students with disabilities and help them to find services and career paths for after high school.

I also have a son who is 16 and he is diagnosed. He's posted here as well.

Am I a kid? Wish I was! I currently feel so old, so shortly after my 20th birthday. I wish I was still a -teen!

Probably I am a kid compared to you, if you are as old as you feel old.

(Some topics are hilarious. I suppose it is wise to leave it at that. I have a hunch most people have good reason to not disclosure their age haha.)

On a side note, think of it a little like this:

By associating with the young, you will stay young in mind and spirit.

That's quite positive.

Me too, except I'm 22, so I'm much older than you. :P Imagine how old I feel.

equinn - Why would you be considered a loser for trying to understand your son? Some parents wouldn't even go that far.

I think what you are doing is great. I am also older...37. My 5 yo son is autistic/nonverbal. I come to this site daily mostly lurking, but have posted a few. I feel like I am helping my relationship with my son by asking questions and reading other posts. I also feel like I have a window into my son's world because of this site. Eventhough every person on the spectrum (and in general) is different, its just helps me to read about the people who post their experiences in their day to day life.

Everyone has been so nice and supportive. To me it does not matter if you are a child, teen or adult. :)

I'm 19, so I hover uneasily between adolescence and adulthood. The great thing about online forums is that you can end up being friends with people you wouldn't naturally associate with in the real world. Age doesn't seem to be too much of a barrier here, although obviously the younger members will probably have a different outlook on life than the more seasoned, older people. And, as Sora said, there's no shame in being around young people. We don't bite - much.

Heh thanks. There's quite a few animal-human combination pics floating around on the web at the moment. None of them, luckily, are actually real pictures of me.

You can't imagine them posting here because they wouldn't tell you if they did. It's not "socially appropriate" to talk about it.

But you needn't stay here relating to us bunch of professional...losers was it.

I re-read her post again, and I can see how you came to that conclusion. I hope she did not mean it that way. :(

You are all supportive, funny and odd, and, no, I don't think of anyone on here that way at all. I find you all interesting. Otherwise, I wouldn't be here. I just pause sometimes and wonder how I arrived here, I guess.

thx,

equinn

Round pegs in square holes topic

Even at Wrong Planet I am a misfit. But I am not a loser. I do not believe anyone here is. I am an adult female in my early fifties. I have three NT children. I am Autistic. :)
