If you have long hair, have you thought about getting it cut short because of the tangles?

I'm getting really fed up with the tangles and wonder if other Aspie or NLD people have difficulties keeping the knots out of the longer hair??? Maybe it's a problem for ALL people (on the spectrum or not) that have long hair... I actually have liked my long hair on occasion, and feel that the style fits my face better.. I always thought that when I lost the weight, I would go with a shorter hairstyle though...

Sometimes, lately, I'll realize that I think I have all the knots out and there will be one I'll find that I think would be visible as a tangled knot to anyone who saw me.. and I think, wow.. I wonder how many times that happens and I don't know it?? It's bad enough trying to get along with people with my social troubles, but if I'm going around with long, knotted hair that wouldn't exactly help...

Just wondering what people think.... I'm seriously contemplating getting it cut.... Last summer, I got it cut significantly, but kindof missed it... felt like part of me was taken away... anyway... just thinking about doing that again ..

Here was a poll idea but I couldn't figure out how to do the Poll --

If you don't have long hair, is it because:

A. You don't like dealing with all the tangles

B. Your female but don't prefer the looks of it

C. Your a guy and prefer to look like most other guys or just don't like the look of it..

D. Your work doesn't allow long hair

My hair actually has more tangles when it's shorter, because the shorter it is, the more it curls. Plus, I like the look of it better when it's long, and I like the weight of it on my head. So I keep mine long.

I have long hair and won't cut it. I've never had it shorter than shoulder legnth. I have to be able to pull it all back, because sometimes it drives me crazy to have it on me.
It's currently as long as it will grow withough looking all scraggly and horrible, to about the bottom of my sholuder blades.
And yes, it tangles. My mom used to say it's like spiderwebs.

I have a similar problem. I have long hair because when I cut it short, my whole family told me it was ugly. :(

The problem is that I don't like how it feels. I have it pulled back in a ponytail 24/7, except when I have a headache. I hate the feeling of hair on my neck and on my face. I mean, it really bothers me.

Also, and this reason might seem kind of silly, but I don't want to look more like a stereotypical lesbian. I don't dress prissy. I have to be comfortable. I never wear make-up. I wear men's shoes because my feet are big and even big women's shoe's aren't wide enough. I have been single for a very long time, I just have no desire to have a boyfriend anymore. So, people have told me that they think I've switched teams. If I cut my hair short, they'd suspect so even more.

Also, I hate having my hair cut. I could probably deal with it for a little while just to get my hair cut, but having someone all in my hair is stressful and annoying.

Sometimes I get so sick of my hair I want to chop it off at the ponytail with my sewing scissors.

Haha! I can so relate... I've thought of chopping it off on occasion.. even shaving it like Britney did.. but I never did that... I know I would regret that.. and it would take a LONG time to grow back if I did THAT! ha!

Yeah, I think I would look more "manly" if I didn't have long hair too... sometimes, I like it though.. I have even lovingly brushed it on occasion -- thing is that I don't brush it enough to keep the tangles out.. and then I end up ripping the hair trying to get tangles out.. I've even had to cut some of them out... Not that most people would really notice tangles all that much.. It's not THAT bad and I've even had comments on how nice my hair is...

It's just that every now and then, I find a BIG tangle.. I don't know how it got there or how the brushing overlooked the tangle so often as for it to get so huge... anyway, that's when I start to think of cutting it, plus with summer on the way, it's starting to warm up here too... I can always put it back in a pony tail and pin it up though i guess... we'll see..

I hate going to get my hair cut also... and not knowing how they will cut it... I've ended up with some haircuts that were QUITE different from what I was expecting.. but I think I WILL just go to get the ends trimmed.. my hair is pretty much even now all along the back... I might go for a little feathering along the sides this time though... we'll see.. That could foul up the pony tail if it's too short though and I'd have pieces hanging out on the sides.... sigh....

This is easy because I've done a lot of experimentation with my hair. It's been 3 ft, 1/16 in, and all sorts of things in between! I have thick hair that tangles easily and this has led to some traumatic experiences that motivate me to keep my hair short. I'm currently growing it out, but I might change my mind because:

When my hair is short it's smooth and silky, but when it reaches a certain length, it changes. Ring curls form on the bottom layer, where no one can see them. The middle layer is thick and wavy. The top layer is very frizzy, like lots of antennae. I don't know why it's like that, but it's certainly prone to tangling.

am not aspie or NLD,though also have had very thick long hair that gets notted easy,am have a brush that has bristles instead of those plastic ones but still found it very bad.
am hate having long hair for sensory reasons, but cannot just walk into a hair dressers to get hair cut [sensory reasons]
or have someone come to home to do it [am need humans to be in regular routine].
so am did the next best thing [what have always done],got a pair of scissors, and cut away at it,yeah it;s a mess, some staff said am did a great job at it,some said am did a great job but it just needs a little finishing off and mum said its a disaster.
am did not care what it looked like, just as long as felt better.

That's how it is with me too. When short, it's an absolute mess of curls; the longer my hair is, the straighter is it, simply because of the weight.

My hair used to tangle a ton, and I hated it. I've gotten to the point now though that it's not as bad; I actually brush it completely, everyday (instead of, I'll do it when I feel like it), and I use good (ie, actually works) conditioner everyday too, so it's not as difficult to manage.

Now that it's summer again, I'm feeling my hair a lot more, and it's kind of annoying me. I won't cut it though, for several reasons; I hate having my hair cut, I look worse than usual with short hair, and it curls like heck when it's short, which means more tangles.

Once my hair was past my waist.

I found it tangled the most when I was sleeping so I always made sure to make a loose braid of it before I went to bed...saved me alot of grief in the morning....and a good leave-in conditioner after you wash it helps too...with the tangles and the winter static. 8O

I leave my hair in a pony tail 24/7, except when I'm trying to "fix" it. It tends to be a compulsive habit for me - fixing my hair. The feeling of the hair really bothers me too, but I keep it long because it's part of my self identity.

My hair tends to tangle when it gets to be a foot below my shoulders. I don't have a problem cutting it - I prefer it to be untangled.

I used to have hair to the top of my legs almost but I cut mine every ten years or so when it reaches that length. I hate the hairdressers and its cheaper to have long hair, lately though, its got drier and more tangly so this time it will stay shoulder length.

Long hair is so much easier for me to deal with and care for. When I was younger though there were many times my mom had to cut dreadlocks out of it. But now I've figured out how to take care of it, so to speak (mostly by letting it alone) and can cut it myself.

I had long hair in my freshman year and it ended up developing a huge knot. I think it was from my coat, but either way, we had no choice but to cut it. That doesn't mean I haven't had long hair before. Right now, I'd say my hair is longish and I'm growing it out even longer.

Curly hair will tangle if you don't take care of it properly. I never had problems with tangling when I shampooed and combed it, but now that I condition it (instead of shampoo) and finger-comb only in the shower it's curlier and tangles more easily. But I like it curlier.

There are books out now on how to take care of curly hair. My favourite is Curly Girl.

Ive had long hair ever since I was about 3. As a child one of my greatest wishes was that it wouldnt get knotty and hurt when my mother brushed it - i find nowadays that it doesnt knot too much though. When I was a teenager I was obsessed with the length of it, would refuse to have it trimmed (in fact it would have looked a lot better with a trim and being washed more often than my twice weekly) and spent every night in bed worrying about the other girl in my year who might have had longer hair than me - I wanted mine to be the longest but it never grew much beyond my waist. I dont know why I wanted it to be so long. Luckily this obsession ended and I decided to cut it to shoulder length and since then it has been longer or slightly shorter, but never less than resting on my shoulders. I have been tempted to go for a really short haircut, and in my lowest depressive points have been tempted to cut it all off, but never did that. Am curious to know what I would look like with really short hair, but probably too scared to ever do it.
