Hi all,
First time on the forum and trying to find out a little about Asperger's syndrome. The reason for this is my 5 year old son. He finds it very hard to socailise at school and would often be seen wandering around on his own. He walks on his tip toes and has a thing about his hands smelling, although they are perfectly clean, would often clean his hands through out the day for no apparent reason. His learning skills are fine and would be average in the class for maths and english. Just a little worried about his interaction with other people and his shyness? Do you think he has Asperger's syndrome?

If you're worried, have your pediatrician make a recommendation to see someone who specializes in autism. It's hard to diagnose so it might be a while or a long drive to someone who knows what they're talking about.

Have you spoken to his or your doctor about it? How long has he been at school? Have you done any online tests for kids? They can often be helpful and you can print it out to take to your/his doctor.

It sounds like he likely does have AS. He shows a few signs, and you make it sound like he doesn't appear to be autistic or adversely affected mentally. Have you talked to him about his socializing, etc...?

yeah walking on tip toes is a sign of autism and washing hands is a symptom of OCD which alot of people on the spectrum are diagnosed with. and usually alot of us are diagnosed with depression, anxiety as well.

The pediatrician isn't necessarily the best to judge, though you might want to see if he/she can refer you to a good child psychologist - preferably with a specialty in ASDs. You'd be amazed at the lack of knowledge out there.
You might want to consider going trhough the district if you have financial restrictions, though, and get in touch with them -right away- if there is a positive dx.
