As some of you know, I foster kittens for the local pet rescue. It's a lot of fun that, coincidentally, helps the community.

There is something that cats do that is really bizarre. They'll be just laying around, then suddenly they will seem to notice something and follow whatever it is with their eyes. They will be so curious as to stand up, and continue to stare intently. More than one will notice this same thing, and watch it move.

The question is: what is this thing they watch???

Everyone says it's some bug or rodent in the wall. But often they will be watching in one direction, then suddenly turn to follow it to some other location. Something in the wall couldn't suddenly be on the other side of the room.

My cat back at my family's house is especially active about chasing "it." She would climb up on furnature trying to get close to the ceiling corner, and meow at it. Then suddenly she would look to the opposite corner, and would run across the room to meow at it.

It seems quite obvious that cats see things that we can't. I'm not superstitious so I don't want to jump to the conclusion of ghosts/spirits. Does anyone know what's happening?

My theory is that they see dust particles moving or something. Or light reflections. Cats have superior eyesight and put us humans to shame.

I always thought the same thing, Cait. On the dust particles, that is. My cat was never all that excited by light reflections, and he still did the running about like a lunatic thing every so often.

Heh, of course, I stare at them, too.

Auras, Guardian Angels, Spirits and energy. Cats are very in tune creatures. My cat does it all the time.

Ps: good on you for the foster home thing, its nice to know that people can care and love animals.

When one of my cats decide to follow "the invisible prey" with their eyes it's often shortly followed by a savage attack on their own tail or a bump in the duvet! So perhaps they're all just nuts in their own little catty way? 8)

Oh, I can keep Phoenix (the kitty in my picture) busy for a while with one of those mirrored light catchers in the window. She literally climbs the wall (or tries to, anyway).

My cat, Sunny, loves to chase bugs. I can usually tell if there's a bug around if she's staring into some corner or sitting somewhere she doesn't normally, like with her head behind the television or something.

She also does this funny clicking noise with her mouth and her whiskers twitch when she's found something. My other two cats do that, too, but not as much.
