Every time my cellphone rings, I nearly jump out of my skin. :(

It scares the crap out of me. Doesn't matter what ringtone I use, either (f you're curious, it used to be peep frogs; now it's Morse code for "SOS"). If it's loud enough for me to hear, my heart tries to exit through my mouth.

I'm willing to consider that this may be due, at least in part, to certain "sensory issues" I have, mostly relating to sudden and/or loud noises, and (since my pregnancy) rapidly flashing lights.

Maybe over time, I'll eventually just get "desensitized" to it?

I guess I could just turn the ringer to silent mode, and learn to compulsively check it for messages every ten minutes or so... :(

But I'm not sure that would be an improvement, overall. :(

Suggestions?

I'm NT and found when I was pregnant I was oversensitive to sound. Can you set it to vibrate instead of ringing.

By the way, my sons were fooling around with my phone and set it to vibrate. I didn't even realise it had a vibrate function.

It was in my pocket and started vibrating. I thought I was having a stroke!!

My phone scares me too, im not used to getting calls and every time it makes a sound i freak out. Ive gotten this habit of "forgetting" to recharge it (actually i think i do it on purpose) so that i dont have to think about it 8O

I guess setting it on silent mode or turning it off is the best suggestion i can come up with, it will ring as long as its on you know :P

Phone

This phone... my ex had one. It had this awesome function where the ringtone would start so quiet you couldn't hear it, and fade louder. Wonderful as an alarm. Maybe you could look into doing something like that with yours? Or custom a ringtone for it that slowly fades in? Might be a bit less jarring.

Mine sounds like an old office phone, and it makes me jump, but it's the only way I'll answer it, cause if it's nice, I'll ignore / listen to it all the way.

For my entire life, I've been raised around cell phones. When I was little, my dad was always the first to have the latest one. Heck, he's still like that today!

Most cell phones have a silent option that will stop the ringer from ringing, you'll probably miss calls, but if you check every once in a while you could call them back if you want to. And many phones have vibrating functions you can use instead of ringers.

The ringing doesn't bother me much, I just feel a little anxious when it starts ringing unless I was expecting a call. When I'm in a movie theater or in a meeting I set it to silent with the option to vibrate turned on.

I simply detest all phones, have a cell phone for that yet materialized 'emergency' and when it rings my adrenaline glands dump a load into my blood stream and I am hanging from the chandeliers by my fingernails.

People are often stumped when I answer grumpily. It's like they are not aware that the phone is for MY convenience, not theirs. What's up with that?

I think it would be good for you to get a nice musical ringtone, something you like. also, some phones have an option to "vibrate then ring", which would set you up for anticipation of the ring. Mine vibrates twice, then sings "Celebrate good times, come on". It's pretty good, actually.

Since we're on the topic of sound sensitivity, I'd like to mention that my most hated sound is that of styrofoam. I cringe even thinking about it. Squeaking of the marker on an eraser board also gets to me.

HAHA, I've thought that about my cellphone a couple times too.

As for helpful advice, I, uh, don't know any. I usually keep mine turned off unless I'm outside and need to check the time.

Is there a particular pitch that bothers you less? For my phone, I have it set on a low-pitched ring, because sudden noises are much more likely to make me jump out of my skin if they're high-pitched. I also have the volume turned as low as it will go.

My phone, the Sony-Ericsson W580i, also does this. :)

My phone is set to a song for my BF called funeral march (i bought it for like .99)

it is not high pitched and goes "dunnhhh nunnnh nuuh nuuh nuunnh nun nuuhhh"

I told him what it was called and he looked at me kinda funny and i had to tell him that it was one of the few songs that didn't scare me when it rang. he almost looked relieved.

but otherwise i just leave mine set for vibrate if at all possible.... i can hear it vibrate from across the room.
