How do you think the public schools are treating autistic students? Good? Bad?

I think it's being done awfully. They almost seem to like kids getting bad grades because they can't really do well in a class with 20 or 30 other kids (like me.), and they don't do anything against bullying either. (Just ignore it! You'll be fine! yeah right...)

I think the entire US school system, as a whole, could be better run by untrained monkeys.

I might have to agree, too.

I am not officially dxed, but considering my mother--a kindergarten teacher--thought autism was only present in people who are mentally ret*d I'd say that the outlook for people with ASDs in the public school system is very poor. Teachers are not taught or have access to small group activities, so a student is always stuck in a large group setting with a lot of social interaction. In high schools mass cruel behavior is not curbed but even encouraged, and anyone with the slightest difference is a target.

I also admit that I haven't had the best school experience. I'm more than willing to admit that I think I'm biased in the matter.

My experience in elementary school was being punished for defending myself, punished for misbehaving and thinking I was being discriminated because it was okay for the other kids to do it but not me but I didn't understand where the lines were drawn of when to break rules. I was punished for impulsive behavior.
Also the fact the staff made a bigger deal about how I acted while other kids were caught on tape for doing goofy things, then in the afternoon I was doing goofy things with one of my friends and they made a big deal out of that acting like none of the other kids never did. Proves I was treated differently.
Also my school principal believed it was okay for kids to tease just as long as they all keep their hands to themselves. She also said kids had to toughen up if they got picked on. Just walk away from it, ignore it. Bullying is part of life and we have to learn to live with it.
Bullying just causes trauma in the person as they get older and it can mess up their minds. Took me till high school to get over it.

In middle school and high school I was treated better after we moved. I was given extra help with my school work, and kids were a lot nicer there. I came to school a half hour late in middle school because all the kids were in class by then so no crowded hallway.

They continually try to call it by some other name, something familiar that they can talk about--referring to symptoms-- because it's just too darn odd and removed from a nonverbal, flapping, pacing autistic.

I think there is an overall lack of acceptance of something that is not easily understood and broadly presented on a spectrum.

It's much easier to call it anxiety, depression, ocd--even OHI--anything but autism for such a high functioning individual.

This tells me there is still that residual understanding of autism and it's once upon a time close relationship to MR.

(this is my take)

We should elect someone with autism or another disability.

You know? forget just autism. All disabled kids are treated bad, so a person with any disability woulddo lots of good.

An african american wheelchair woman would be the way to go. 8)
