Does anyone else frequently not look at what they're doing?

What I mean is: I often don't look at what my hands are doing.

If I pour a glass of a soda, I must remember to keep my eyes at the glass. Else I'd just stare into space or look at another thing. Or when I reach out to take something from the shelves, I don't look at it and just let my hands find it.

Edit: But I usually don't focus (=pay attention) on something else though. My eyes are... somewhere. I'm entirely focussed on pouring a glass of soda, just not visually focussed.

I wondered whether this may be common in autistic people?

I never look at what I'm doing. Not even my Rubik's Cube. And when I walk, I take in the layout of a room with my peripheral vision, and keep my eyes straight ahead. It tends to make me look spacey, and like I'm not really paying attention, when in reality I'm "seeing" everything. if that makes sense.

My husband is always amazed that I can type without looking and I'm always at it. I let my little autism driver work on myt hands and the rest of my brain works on the telly or whatever else I'm paying attention to.

Oh, 'autodrive' is impossible with my mind. I meant it somewhat differently. Well, I think. I'm not sure.

I do pay full attention to what my hands are doing, but I just don't pay visible attention. I couldn't close my eyes though. When I shut out one of my senses, my others go rapid and make me feel sick and dizzy.

I find it much easier to leave the eyes out of whatever I'm doing. Because when I try to pay visual attention I must first: direct my eyes there and keep them there. And then second: take in what I see and focus on... the glass in my hand. (And dare my eyes don't start to wander after this!)

I usually don't look at what I'm doing when typing, playing piano, drawing, etc. However, when pouring or writing I have to look (to make sure the liquid goes in the glass or the writing goes on the lines). However, even if I am not looking, there's no way I can close my eyes; on that point, I agree with Sora.

I never have to look at anything I'm doing; I'm not very visual. The only thing I have to look at is when I'm walking down the stairs :S I HAVE to look down, or I'll trip.

I have to look at what i'm doing or else i'll do it wrong or, sometimes literally, mess it up. Excluding typing on the computer keyboard. Thank goodness for typing lessons.
