Hi

I hope you are all having a nice Labor Day. What do you all think of Labor Day in general?

I really never understood the concept/point of Labor Day. The same thing applies to several other holidays. Maybe I ought to learn more about-it, and I will.

Here in the Continental Europe (Italy, France, Germany, Spain, all the former Warsaw Pact countries...) the Labor Day is the first of May and it is celebrated to remeber the workers that died fighting for their rights and their safety in the first part of last century. It was born as a socialist celebration indeed still now it is managed by the Trade Unionsa and left wing parties. Not all the people celebrate it but is still nice to have a day off...

It is the same here in Australia. The unions and the Labour Party here celebrate the day as having won the battle for many rights like an eight hour working day. It is celebrated on different days in each state.

I'm just bumping this thread up because today is the day. The question is at the top of the thread.

Quote:
Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894. In most other countries—and among the leftists in the United States and Canada—May Day (May 1) is celebrated instead.

This was from Answer.com

A holiday is a holiday. Enjoy it, some people actually don't have to work those and get to relax. You don't see them begging to be at work.

This link also tells about Labor Day type things in other countries as well:

Here in France, Labor Day (1rst of May) is the only public holiday which is paid double if you are asked to work on that day. People are traditionnally authorized to sell lilies of the valley in the streets. Trade unions organize huge demonstrations in the main french cities while far-right parties organize processions to honor Saint Joan of Arc who is supposed to protect us from Brits, Arabs, sin... everything supposed to be a threat for our pure nation

I don't like this day. The over-crowding of holidays is one of the reasons my summer is only 2 months long.

Another one of the points of Labor Day is to commemorate your hard work, unless you have been fired from a job. I neglected to mention, I had another paid job working at my local library doing data entry for people who have since passed away.

This Labor Day does mean a fair bit to me, although we are still hearing about Hurricane Katrina and such, but I will have to let that be a moot point after a while. I start school tomorrow. I will make the best of today as I possibly can.

I like Labor Day. It gives me a three-day weekend away from work. I've needed a three-day weekend for quite some time now.

I think it's a bad joke. It is one of the few days we are not allowed to ask to have off where I work, because the store is going to be flooded with customers buying stuff for parties, picnics, and barbecues. :? My birthday was 2 days ago and I couldn't ask to even have that off: too close to good old Labor day!
