I've been thinking about the cure forever, i worried a bit then realized why worry, if there is ever a cure it wont be for awhile im talking 10 years or probably longer, and that cure will prob only be for new borns or fetuss not born yet. By then with the rapid people being diagnosed skyrockets each year, so many ppl will protest against it that itll probably be abonished as soon as its discovered if you really think about it.

I read a study awhile back about how some psychaitrists, autism specialists, psychologists, developmental pediatricians, scientists, genetists all think in 10-15 years half of the world will be on the spectrum somewhere. I don't know if i believe that or not, but just recently i noticed a lot more people getting diagnosed, a friend of mine, my only real friend lol, always had social problems didnt think anything by it, took some aspies quizes scored higher then she thought, and might be pursuing a diagnosis herself. If that is true, it is a good possiblity her mother and sister will be on the spectrum as well.

Wherever we go, somebody always knows somebody with an autistic child, or autistic adult. My boyfriend is in the process of getting a new job, hes been to soo many places applying and every place he goes to i come along, ppl ask him whats wrong with her, because yes i do stand out lol, and he says she has autism. The reply he seems to always get is "oh yes i know somebody with autism also." Now it always makes me wonder why so many people want a cure, mostly parents of autistic children, and why theres so much money and research into a cure when it even does happen will it even matter, will it even stop anything? wouldnt it just be a waste of money and time? What is everybody elses opinions :?:

No to a cure.

Stop wasting money on cure research.

Redirect this money into early diagnosis, community education regarding strengths and difficulties experienced by aspies/auties, appropriate support services for adult aspies/auties, appropriate support services for parents, better education for teachers and medical professionals.

I doubt it. Parents will want there kids to be normal and society isn't going to want to deny them. Protesters will be seen as fringes.

I do agree that more money needs to be put into those currently diagnosed and improving their lives. Plus public understanding.

I'm still not quite sure what people are referring to when they talk about a "cure". Is there some specific development that may hint on what this would specifically entail?

It's mythical as far as I'm concerned. At least for those already developed.

A cure would entail a restructuring of the way your brain works. Anybody over the age of 10 or so don't have the plasticity for any cure to work.

Cure is simply a word used to separate bleeding hearts (and parents who can't abide the stigma of their child being different), from their money. There will never be a cure for autism, anymore than there will be one for being gay, being an alpha a**hole, or being a naturally gifted musician.

Do you really want your brain rewired in order to change your personality?

Who would you trust to do that?

Why would you want to do that to anyone else*?

*anyone else who did not constitute a physical threat to themselves or others.

All I have to say is that if the cure is to remove disabilities, they will have to ADD things to NTs as well! In other words, they wouldn't work to make everyone NT, but a kind of social, talented AS! If that is the case, and others have success, GREAT! I'll Take it! If they just want to "cure" the autism, it would be a bit hypocritical!

Very well put.

If there ever is a cure that doesn't involve aborting fetuses, it would probably remove the benefits associated with Autism/Aspergers. Not to say I wouldn't take it though, being completely honest.

I'm against a cure. To attempt to cure someone on the spectrum is the same as saying that they're broken. I'm not broken.

Aborting fetuses seems like the most likely direction of any potential "cure," as current research is focused largely on finding genetic markers for that purpose. Down's Syndrome has already gone that way, and it seems likely that will be the fate of autism if Autism Speaks gets their way.

That's the reason that I hate Autism Speaks.

Never thought about it, but I can't deny it's probably true.

Rather scary really.

Even with a cure, older people may need help learning nonverbals. Or maybe not. If there's no assistance for that now, where will it be after a cure? Also, I want to see the cure first. Which scandal-ridden pharma will make the cure? What side-effects will be kept secret until people die from them? Uncle Secret sure won't tell us until afterward and we'll never know which of their minions-in-charge took a fat payoff to make it happen.

At least, I hope it'll be voluntary.

Those are some GOOD points! Of course, a talented AS person, as I specified earlier, could easily adjust. But there likely WILL be problems that likely WILL be hidden.

In the Soviet Union everybody was supposed to think that Communism is great and wonderful and those who disagreed were "mentally ill" and had to be cured. They were placed in mental institutions. Similarly, in the Nazi Germany it would be "normal"to go to the fuhrer's speeches and scream "Heil Hitler". Those who did not want to do that probably needed "therapy" as well.
