A few years ago when he was 7 or 8, my godson(11 now) was diagnosed with PDD/NOS. At first they thought AS but he had extremely delayed speech. Well today while his mother was trying to get his care switched to their new home state the Dr. she had been dealing with, not the Dr that made the original diagnosis, told her that he doesn't have anything he is just extremely shy. They had just put that down so he could get counciling. She told him that that is a label he doesn't want to carry around with him for the rest of his life. But if it makes you feel better.

Have any parents had this happen? Is this common due to lack of any real knowledge on AS, PDD/NOS?
Does a diagnosis matter much for a child? I would like to think that a professional for him to have access to would be helpful but not that kind of professional.

It happens when a doctor doesn't know much about AS and thinks all auties are like rainman. Sadly, it seems to be rather common among those that got their degrees a while back and haven't bothered to keep up with the times.

It can be both helpful and hurtful to a child to have a DX. If he wants to enlist, and its his dream, the DX will effectively keep that from happening. But, if he's having troubles in school and could possibly use a bit of help, the DX will be very handy in getting him on an IEP or something similar.

Yes, if he gets a label he gets to keep it, but, it's not like any Tom, Dick, or Harry could gain access to those records. So, unless he has gov't dreams, a DX is probably a good idea, if only that if something does happen, he doesn't have to wait for help until a DX can be made.
