Hey, who here has been on Zyprexa (olanzapine) and how did it work on you? So far it either makes me feel better or doesn't do anything to me. It's not just an antipsychotic, also a mood flattener. They said it works on most people and that it would help my antidepressant work better, and it doesn't bring you down when you feel average or keep you down and that's how it flattens the mood, it doesn't work like that, or so they said.

I take risperidone which is an atypical anti-psychotic/mood stabilizer.

It works brilliantly for controlling my anger and agression and irritation. I love it. I went off it once...and it wasn't pretty. Supposedly I'm bipolar...but I might not be because AS can cause similar issues. However, it works great, and I wouldn't give it up (although at first I was concerned that I wouldn't feel anything, and I thought it was making me drowsy).

Give it a try...and by that I mean 3 months before you make a decision. I'll tell you that an anti-psychotic coupled with an anti-depressant (which works on my anxiety) has worked wonders for me, and made life alot easier.

Good luck!

You should try it out, the worst that could happen is permanent physical harm of some sort. Like kidney failure or brain scarring. I don't trust pills...

LOL. My thoughts exactly. I have no interest in changing my brain chemistry like that. I understand that there are some people who absolutely can't function without psychiatric drugs, but I don't believe that I'm one of them, as rough as things can be sometimes. It's just not worth changing my brain like that.

People with a mental illness may need drugs but Aspies don`t.

But a lot of aspies also have mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and OCD.

I hate to say it but I heard bad things about Zyprexa. It literally puts a 100 pounds on you and causes diabetes. If the doctor prescribed that medicine, I would not take it. I'd rather have the thought insertion. I take Abilify, Geodon, and Zoloft. I don't believe I need the pills at all because I don't hallucinate that often. The pdocs think I am psychotic but I don't think I am because I am perfectly normal.

Okay... I put on 8 pounds. Today I ate a TV dinner wiht two chicken drumsticks and a few spoonfuls of corn and a few spoonfuls of mashed potatoes, one or 2 Rice Krispies squares with one side coated in chocolate, 3 or 4 kiwis, 6 packets of porridge, and a bowl of rice puffs with milk in it. Now I'm making some spaghetti. I eat all day long. It's torture to ignore the craving for food. I might have to switch. But the crisis team says they'll have their nutritionist talk to me, to make meal plans and that where I won't be hungry but won't gain weight.

I had a bad experience with Zyprexa, where I was so tired, I wasn't able to function as a college student. The other thing is that I gained at least 40lbs from that drug, and I'm very lucky I don't have diabetes as a result.

I think the reason I didn't gain more weight was that the psychiatrist agreed to take me off it when I complained too much about the sleepiness after a month of taking it. I made the mistake of mentioning a family history of bipolar disorder to that quack even though I only had depression at the time. I have never had a manic phase, so I know I'm not bipolar, just an Aspie.

I gained alot of weight too, when I took Zyprexa and I only eat yogurt, fresh fruits and vegetables. I made my psychiatrist take
me off Zyprexa and immediately my weight returned to my normal, slim body.

A couple of years ago, there was a huge media campaign of lawyers looking for patients who had taken Zyprexa and suffered ill effects...apparently, Zyprexa is "bad" medicine and should not even be on the market and prescribed by any medical physicians.

There are plenty of other psychiatric drugs a physician should prescribe instead.

I was on thioridazine and thiothixene when I was younger. No thank you. Don't dope me up and flatten everything to a medium gray, I'd rather go crazy, thank you very much. I have taken every drug that is not for a particular infection or chronic illness, and as far as my Aspie symptoms go, none of them are worth crap, except the ones that are controlled, and even those only in certain circumstances, rarely, and in limited quantities.
