The start of my journey to a diagnoses....?
I've been posting here since the begining of July. After finding out about aspergers syndrome, I came here to try and get a better picture as to where I stand in regards to aspergers. And while I have learned a great deal about myself, and about autism in general. I still have that little doubt in my head that this is not me, that I'm just driving myself down another dead end road and will crash head on into the embankment at the end. I've meet up with a person on campus who has an offical DX, and to me, it's almost like looking into a mirror when I talk with this person about how apsergers has affected the both of us. But's it's been 14 years since I had any kind of mental examination and I figure now is the best time to do something about it. Since I'm at a major university and have access to mental health and general health services, I decided to take things to the next level. I fired off an email to a clinical psychologist in the counseling center here at oshkosh and was suprised to get an email right back.
>Hello, my name is Scott XXXXXX and I'm a junior here at oshkosh,
>I live in evans, room 220. A google search for clinical psychologists
>in the oshkosh area turned up your name. To start, recently I
>have become aware of the fact that I possible suffer from
>Asperger's Syndrome, but have never been offically diagnosed
>with it. I have
>been DX'ed with ADHD, but now I think that this was a misdiagnoses
>since Aspergers was not in the DSM when I was DX'ed with ADHD.
>While I won't bore you with details, A self-audit of concrete and
>anecdotal evidence relating to my past, reveals many,
>un-mistakeable signs, that I suffer from this. Anyways, at the advice
>of another student who attends here at oshosh, who also has
>aspergers, I'm contacting you since I wish to obtainsome kind of
>formal examination and diagnoses, but at this time, don't know who
>to turn to. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
>
>Thanks
>Scott XXXXXX
Dear Scott,
We may or may not be able to give you a definitive answer to your question about whether or not you have Asperger's, but we can work with you to clarify how this is affecting you and begin establishing some strategies for dealing with it.
I am referring you to Dr. Mike Altekruse, a psychologist here at the
Counseling Center. He has a quite a bit of experience with ADHD and more experience with Asperger's than others here, though I have to admit we are weak in this area. He will refer you to someone in the community if the two of you decide our services do not meet your needs.
All you need to do to set up an appt. with Mike is call 424-XXXX or stop by
201 Dempsey Hall and state that you want to schedule an intake with Dr.
Altekruse and they will set it up. You won't need to go into any details
about your situation over the phone.
I hope we hear from you soon,
Joe Abhold
So with that e-mail, I hopefully will be on my way to getting some kind of DX

I have my inital appointment scheduled for friday morning at 9am. I don't know what the session will be like, but friday morning I hope to go into detail with the doctor about my problems. The only thing I can do now is wait and see.
My 256th post, 256 being an important number in the computer world. (2^8=256)
