I was watching tv today when I heard of a mental disorder that causes you to be socially challenged called AS. I have always been REALLY shy so I decided to look it up. I saw the behaviors that people with AS can have and I really believe that I have it now. I have always been "that quiet kid" in school. Im always thinking about how close i should stand/sit next to someone and eye contact is almost painful for me. (Im on a mobile browser so i will continue in a my next post)

It's always possible. Have you sought out a diagnosis?
Welcome : )

Finding a way to get diagnosed can be difficult or extremely difficult depending on where you live. It's always easier if you're a student and a teacher who knows about AS notices your symptoms.
I have some advice for you: Don't tell people that you have AS if you haven't been diagnosed. Less and less people are taking AS seriously because so many people who aren't professionally diagnosed are saying that they have it. Many of those people don't actually have it...

That's true. And it is important to look at a possible diagnosis as a chance at self-understanding, and not as an excuse for your behavior.
But if you suspect you are AS, you should definitely explore it. : )

(sorry about this) Im always worried about where my hands are when im sitting or standing and Im always very nervous when recieving hugs. It feels so good to finally tell someone this... i feel like ive been trapped or something. My parents have never suspected me of any mental disorer. I live a fairly normal life, but its things like these that make me feel so upset on the inside when im around friends or family. I would be so happy if i could just not worry about things like hand placement or (continued)

(thanks for the quick replies!) eye contact. Right now im just happy to know that there are many people like me. I really want to know what I should do. Im afraid that if I tell someone they may just say its a load of bull... and i dont want my parents to have to pay for a visit to a psychiatrist...

I havent sought a diagnosis yet... Ive always suspected that there was something not quite right with my behavior, and when I learned of AS today I felt like the descriptions fit me almost perfectly. How should i go about this?

Hmmm. I would go to an autism specialist, since general psychologists tend to be a little, uh, uninformed. And try to find out if anyone you know has AS or a spectrum disorder - a friend, a family member, anyone. It's easier to do when you're not alone.

That sucks. Here in Canada, it's free (at least for students. I'm not so sure about adults). Where do you live?

there's a couple of tests in the forums here; to be honest, there should be a sticky at the top for requests like these..;) They're not foolproof, but they can help confirm or deny what you already suspect.

Im going to have a talk about this with my parents in the morning... are there ways to improve my condition (therapy even if i dont have AS)? People have told me that to be more outgoing i have to gradually start talking to more and more people but i just CANT talk to people that I dont know. When i was in elementary school if an unfamiliar classmate started talking to me i would just sit there and ignore them because i was scared. Ahh im sorry I seem to be rambling... i just need to tell someone this

It's okay, ramble as much as you want. And if you need someone to talk to more privately, who might share the experience, feel free to message me. (Or don't. Whatever you want.)

I average at thirty-four or thirty-three. I think that basically it puts you in a grey area - you're spectrum, but people could argue whether or not you qualify for AS.

But it also depends on which test you're taking, I know some super-Aspie people who have scored as low as thirty on it, but overqualify for other tests.

The best way to put an end to it is to see whether or not you can be professionally diagnosed.
