Do you know your friends' interests? If so, get them something relatively inexpensive, but that they'd definitely like to receive. If not, learn about what their hobbies are, then shop accordingly.
For example, I've done some Christmas shopping lately, and picked out relatively cheap ( $10 at most ) gifts that played to my friends' personalities. I got one of my teachers/counselors ( who is the person who led me to get diagnosed for AS, so I owe her greatly for that ) a blank journal with stylized paintings of cats on the cover, because I know she likes writing and cats. I got my best friend a theme deck of Magic:the Gathering cards, because I know he likes the game and would appreciate the specific cards I got him. I'm still working on my family, but there's 19 shopping days left, so I'll figure out something
Also, home-made gifts are a cheap but very effective way to show you care. Getting them a generic Hallmark Christmas card is tacky, yes. MAKING them their own personal Christmas card is a definite sign that you care.
