Imdb forums
The responses to most questions, particularly lower rated, less serious movies seem to attack the concept of asking any question at all. The following is from a single thread on Junior but other forums have similar content:
How does a lightsaber work? Lasers don't just suddenly end like that! Star Wars deserves a 4/10!
Honestly people, lighten up, and enjoy the film for what it is.
GET A LIFE!
There is a single informative reply. I know it's a comedy and doesn't need to make sense but is wrong to even think about a movie? Is asking a question saying 'bad things' about a movie, or is it positive by showing an interest?
There was another thread on Cube or Hypercube. A major part of the plot was based on maths which appears incorrect so there was a discussion about it. There were obviously some people that were not interested in this so they gave their opinion.
I can enjoy movies at their intended level without any problems, but some things might make me think more about them. This isn't attacking the movie like some people seem to assume. I notice the same attitude in a lot of places. If people are interested in something, or think about something, then what is so wrong about that, and why are people so hostile towards it? If people don't want a discussion, then they don't need to respond in the first place.
People feel intimated when someone doesn't like the movie they liked so they feel they have to defend themselves. Just my guess. I see that drama a lot on there when I go to movie boards. It's usually on new release movies though. Makes the place more interesting but shows how much dumb asses there are unfortunately.
I hate it when Benny & Joon gets bashed because I think it's a very good movie and to say its awful just sickens me. But if they are going to talk like that, I have the right to ask them why they thought it was awful. But some people see that as an attack unfortunately instead of open mindness. A narrow minded person would attack them for their opinion or think bad of them.
I think badly of people who do the attacking for no reason.
I get this too. Sometimes I'm just interested, I'm just speculating, and they get angry at me just for asking a question. I mean, it's okay to be mad at someone for "attacking" something you like, but only if they criticize it without basis.
I think badly of people who do the attacking for no reason.
BENNY & JOON ROCKS!! !

I try not to read the IMDB forums...every time I do, I'll find like ten posts per movie that are completely misinformed, and I'm so tempted to chime in and correct them...I just have to sit back and tell myself "no"

On IMDB, people just state their opinions, so yeah, it will be misinformed in that aspect, but I do find sometimes useful and great posts as well, what I don't understand is why someone who doesn't like a movie bother to post on its forum that they don't like it.
Another thing, it seems that you have to pay or having bought something from amazon.com to be able to post there, right?

I couldn't imagine watching a movie and not questioning or analyzing it in some way! If I did not do either of these things, then I can only assume that the movie was not in any way mentally stimulating for me, therefore, a total waste of my time. Plus (this may sound really geeky but...) I love questioning or analyzing stuff like books and movies purely because that's how my mind works. If you are smart enough to do this, I say do it. The ones that attack others are those that cannot see past what they have seen and just duly accept it. In some cases, movies are created for visual stimulation only, meaning you are going to get people who treat every movie like this regardless of whether there is meaning to it or not (I call people like this 'mentally watered down' as they cannot use their brains or think their brains are just for school or college). I consider those that actualy question or analyze a movie to be making proper use of it.

The worst part is when people have opinions on movies when solid facts are available that contradict them. Somehow, what the director says about his own film is not valid?

I enjoy spending time on the IMDB forums. For movies that I've just seen, it adds to the perspective. I've seen intelligent, well-written critiques that have made me go back and watch a movie again that at first look I took for simply okay.
I do, however, discriminate against films that are flung to the public without any respect for the audience's desire for good story, acting, direction, etc. I know when they are going through the motions without much attempt at craft. It's not a matter of analyzing; it's more that I've llived long enough to see lots of really good films, and can usually tell when someone tries to suck me into a tired, formulaic retread.
