I was just on ZomgAspies, checking it out, and the first thing I came across was a whole bunch of people whining about how Aspies 'think they're superior.' Now, I have a lot of issues with what I saw on that site (i.e., them calling this 'FagPlanet',) but that's not what this is about. It's about this:
Many NTs seem to assume we think we're superior to them or something. Now I have never personally met an Aspie who feels this way. I certainly do not feel this way. AS can be a serious disability and I certainly don't think it makes a person better than someone without it. I mean, sure, we may sometimes, in some areas, surpass NT skills, but I can't imagine actually bragging about my Asperger's.
Which begs the question:
How the hell did this idea propogate?
Can anyone fill me in?

I've seen some members post comments on this board before that seem to imply feelings of superiority to NTs, but, for the most part, Aspies seem more humble than NTs overall to me.

I feel completely superior in only that I feel no need to feel superior.

There are those who see AS (and some even the entire spectrum) as an evolutionary process. There are those who believe that the 'disconnection' makes their views and systems 'superior' to others, usually in reference to the NT population. ZOMG seems to enjoy the sensational; it all depends on the flavor you desire, I suppose. Some NT's correlate AS/Autism to savant skills, and further a stereotype. And then there are those who are proud of who they are, all the trimmings included, and this is sometimes seen as being unduly proud of one's condition, a sad confusion when it is truly being proud of one's self.

Superior? Hah! Some days I feel really inferior to NTs and just want to be normal, if only to be accepted and have friends.

Oh my...who are those people? I've never heard of that website before until now and looked it up and went to the forum. Are these people Aspies? Or are they just NT's who go online all day and bash Aspies? Sounds to me like they come here and "watch" us read our comments and form opinions of who we are by what we say here...then go to their flaming hell and rip us to pieces. I don't get it. Why??! ! We didn't do anything to them. Oh wait, they must be the obnoxious NT bullies we put up with in school and still do at work, yeah, maybe that's it.
I personally have no clue where they came up with the idea that Aspies think they're superior. That's bullsh*t. Even though I don't think I cry over my AS...I sometimes do complain about it. But this is a SUPPORT website for Aspies. Geesh!
I am really surprised there are people out there who can be that cruel. If they think they can handle it, I'd love to give them a dose of my AS. Then lets see where they'd come running to when the going gets tough. They'd probably just crawl in a corner and flip out because they can't handle it.
As far as I'm concerned, hell yeah, if I'm going to be accused of being superior by them then that must be what they fear, therefore, I am.

Okay, looking at it closer it looks like people trying to understand Aspies. I don't know what it is for sure and I don't get it or the purpose of it. If someone here can clarify what that website is I would sure appreciate it.

That makes a lot of sense.

I was very confused! With a name like ZomgAspies I thought it would be another support-group type thing. It's sad -- their very implication that I had a superiority complex almost completely deflated my self esteem.

Yeah, it's very insulting and does deflate the self esteem. And some of the other things they say are insulting but there seems to be Aspies there so I don't get it.

It’s a psychological defense mechanism. When we get together as a minority group we want to counteract the inferiority we feel in the eyes of the majority by building a superiority complex. It’s the same phenomena that lead to reverse racism against whites in some black communities. It’s kind of ironic because it means we aren’t all that different from NT’s in having socially reinforced psychological drives.

There are certain things about human culture that I don’t like but I don’t pin all of it on NT’s. I’ll just say it’s the majority of the human race that gets to me. I’m an equal opportunity misanthrope. I don’t like breaking people up into rigid categories in order to judge them. I judge all humanity, including myself.

NTs? They have AS too or are on the spectrum. I didn't think they were whining, just talking and having fun.

To answer Droopy's question about who those people are, they are former WP members here. Some were banned and some left. Very few go to this site and to that site and I am one of them. What I like about that place is I can express myself freely about what I think of some WP members here without worrying about getting flamed or shot down or people thinking I am an ass for thinking that of someone or them.
They didn't like this site so they left or because they were banned. Lot of them don't like the mods here.
Aspies and auties can get annoyed by other aspie and autie members too. There are even some people here who irritate me but I will try and sound civil in my posts when I respond to them but other times I don't respond at all because I can't think of a nice way to respond to them or i am afraid people will call me a troll for what I said. Ugh I hate that word now because it is getting abused. People just throw that word around for no reason, if they don't like what someone said or didn't like someones opinion, they call them a troll. But sadly I come off as rude to some people. I'm not sure why.

That's a great example!

Yeah, I do get really sick of all the NT bashing. I just thought it was sad and insulting that so many people seemed to assume that all of us thought we were superior. Because I don't feel that way.

Well apparently they are Aspies, or most are, and that's another support website. I still don't quite understand it but if I offended anyone with my original post I apologize. I didn't look at the whole picture and jumped to conclusions before posting. *sigh*

And I didn't read your whole post when I started replying so I went back and read the rest of it and had to do some editing. A habit I am trying to break.

It's not a support site but they will give it if you need it.

I wouldnt't be too quick to judge zomgaspies.com. I don't know where the NTs bashing aspies theory came from, lol, but unless I'm a complete ret*d (I've been known to exhibit some factors, but not all), I think they be a legit aspie place. Just check out the Sophie section for the proof.

Anyway, this was all before my time, so I don't know...

And who f-ing cares about other people thinking you got a superiority complex? F-ck em, prove 'em right. 8) Is being superior all that bad? :o

[edit]
Bit slow on the post button here, thanks for clearing it up SpokaneGirl.

Thanks for clarifying for me Spokane Girl. I just now saw your post and it's making more sense now. I don't get annoyed by other people at all very easily, just judgemental NT's which was my first impression that that's what that website was at first. I still don't understand why there seemed to be so much Aspie bashing but some of the topics were pretty interesting and made sense. I'm really tired too and think I best just go to bed, it's 4am where I'm at. I also recognized there were some members there that I've seen here before after looking closer.
I've never read any post of yours where I thought you were being rude, that I can recall. But I thought some, if not most, Aspies do tend to come off rude, even when they're not trying to be, so I usually just don't see that in most of the posts here. I have noticed many are accused of being a troll way too easily. I don't really care if someone is a troll or not myself and I don't pay much attention, meaning it just doesn't cross my mind. If a message popped up on my computer from them telling me "Your gold is now me gold!", then I might suspect it but otherwise, I don't really care.

Okay, I really have got to go to bed now.
