I have read a few posts where some of you have said that your brain is always "on". This hits home for me and I have the worst problem making it stop. When I watch TV and words appear, I instinctively know whether to count the letters in 2's or 3's, I count the lanes when I am driving either in 2's or 3's (kind of hard to explain), it never seems to go away or very rarely does. If anybody else has something similar, what are some techniques to help?

It is not just the counting that it annoying, it's the constant activity that is the issue. Anything would help, really.

I don't. Can't be done. Grab hold of the safety bar and hang on tight for the ride of your life! That's my philosophy. Treat it like a roller coaster and use it. I just do stuff all day long until I drop at the end of the day from exhaustion.

If I could stop it, the lack of activity would drive me insane.

The way that I get my intrusive thoughts to stop, is to stop playing Nintendo, go on WP and listen to The Kinks. That calms me down so much that the difference is like night and day. I tend to turn to sporty video games when I'm upset and sometimes my thoughts multiply if I'm not performing as well as I usually do.

I used to drink a lot to calm my thoughts down, but it lead to other poor decisions, so now I avoid it completely. I wouldn't recommend drinking or drugs if you can possibly avoid it.

Exercise really helps, jogging, walking, elliptical machines, any kind of cardio numbs my brain and calms me down. I do this for 2 hours a day or more (not like I have much of a social life so the time isn't a problem) and it calms my brain down and puts me in a state of meditation almost.

Or listening to ambient noises on my iPod when I'm idle helps me to focus on something other than my thoughts.

The only method I've been able to use successfully is drowning it in alcohol, but that usually results in some unpleasant side effects.

concentrate on your breathing. count your breaths. see if that helps, if it doesn't then no consequences for trying.

I slap on an audiobook - to sleep that is, Otherwise any special activity does the job.

My psychiatrist recommended Risperdal. I said no. I prefer to have my mind going.

I guess if you wanted to try meds, you could; but I really think that would be overkill.

Have you tried stuff like going somewhere dim and quiet and relaxing in a comfortable spot--just letting your thoughts drift? That's a good stress buster.

I also find a lot of relaxation in special interests.
